I’m going to start by saying I’m definitely not an expert when it comes to taxes.
My wife is likely losing her job around October due to a company merger. We’re planning to apply for unemployment right away, but I’m trying to figure out if I should update my tax withholding because of that.
On top of that, we’re expecting our first child in November, so great timing from the universe (sarcasm).
I have a couple questions:
– Should I adjust my W-4 when she loses her job because she may not have income for a while?
– Can I claim my wife as a dependent until she finds a new job?
– If she’s receiving unemployment, does that change whether I can claim her?
I’m just trying to get ahead of things and not mess this up.
Any help or guidance is appreciated!
