Currently living with my parents and make $121,600 in San Francisco.

    Checking Account: $2,000
    HYSA Cash Account: $1,000
    HYSA Emergency Fund: $20,000
    Roth 401K: $76,200
    HSA: $10,000
    Roth IRA: $50,300
    Brokerage: $20,700
Liabilities/Debt: None (had a $23k student debt that I finally paid off)
    Total net worth: $180,000

Currently maxing out my Roth 401K contributions, HSA, and Roth IRA. Following the 3 fund boglehead portfolio. Emergency fund is settled for 6 months. Current goal is building that $1000 HYSA cash account to $10,000. Whenever a paycheck comes, I put it all into my HYSA with nothing allocated to my personal brokerage. Is this the right move? I do hope to move out soon by either Jan 2027 or even July 2027 (no real timeline).

    1. You’re doing very well.
Keep living with your parents as long as it’s convenient, and keep saving.

I did exactly the same from 25 to 28 and I don’t regret it one bit.

I will say that 10k cash sounds a bit high for someone living with their parents, but when looking at the overall situation, it doesn’t matter too much.

    2. Your investments are commendable but once you move out hopefully you have everything planned out. Not saying you’re doing anything wrong, but just be careful and mindful under this economy as everything now is getting more expensive every year

I’m 28 and no I’m not perfect but I have 10k in retirement, projected to have 2-3k in savings by the year end after travel and other expenses, had 30k debt 5 years ago now that number is around 5k. My credit scores were in the 500s now they are in the mid 600s (fico) to mid 700s (vantage). Since I started dating my partner things have been getting much better but I’ve held off contributing retirement significantly until all my debt is settled though I will say I have no credit card debt or high interest loan debt, not anymore at least. I have around 9k in checking and I plan on investing somewhat besides retirement but I make 50-55% less than you, in a year or two.

You got this. Unlike you I didn’t take good advantage with living with parents and chose to live irresponsibly but we all start somewhere:)

I would slow down on your retirement contributions.

Save more money to purchase a house if you plan on staying in the same location for 5+ years. Having a larger withdrawable balance will allow you to take advantage of a market downturn that may or may not happen in the next few years.

    4. Impressive stuff man. If you plan on moving out I’d allocate just a bit more savings to that- the $10k cash account is more than enough since you already seem to have a large amount of cushion in the EF. Outside of that, if you’re not saving for a large purchase, then consider upping your 401k contributions to “fill that bucket” first before moving to the taxable brokerage. Keep it up!
