In the U.S., long-term capital gains for a single individual is already 0% upto 40k, 80k if married. I get worried hearing about these proposals because it might start a process where this is removed, or lowered to that said amount. Any bill written that has a chance of passing should note that long-term capital gains should at minimum remain at parity with current law, that it should only affect short-term capital gains.
If the bill already has this limitation stated, then it should be a part of the reporting process. If this limitation isn't part of the bill, then it's a bad bill and it should be squashed immediately.
Also, people that cry they want regulations, need to understand that laws already exist that protect people. There does not need to be anymore regulations created, they just only add barriers of entry.
I'm not going to spell it all out here this time, but in essence, those that are already regulated entities (such as banks) need to be upheld to their regulations, things like thefts and scams already have laws, and that should be enforced as is. Traditional law and current regulations are already enough. The only real problem is some entities don't want to uphold it, they should be fired.
A case in point, crypto is not labeled as currency if you want to claim capital loss of the dollar against it, but is labeled as a currency if the department of justice wants to say a person broke money service as a business laws. It's those entities that should not be allowed to cherry pick, and the ones in office that don't recognize this should not be allowed to create regulations. If they are really into crypto, they should know this sitation and target these issues first.

These people are politicians… they are not our friends. Why do most people need to have a building fall on their heads to realize that? It will never change. It is not different this time. Nothing they say, DO, or propose ever_ever_ever makes your life or property better. NEVER. The so called regulations (no matter what they are) are designed to hurt you. One day maybe more human beings will wake up from their zombie sleep to grasp this truism of life… but I doubt it.
This is the fourth time that the whole bitcoin market has collapsed. It will eventually reach a new high point, with battle-tested efforts surviving. The majority of cryptocurrencies is a fraud that will die out if prices remain low for a lengthy period of time, but will resurface during the next Bull cycle.

Al DeTrolio – I agree with your take- nearly entirely. Unfortunately, the Libertarian panacea is far from our grasp. Government exists. If you are able to exist outside that reality, kudos to you! Also, If you assume I think that the politicians are our friends, then I misstated my original point-or I wasn't clear enough on that aspect. We will continue be regulated by enforcement into the dirt until congress lays the groundwork for jurisdictional clarity, and the means for innovation by legit projects within this new asset class/ space here in the U.S.. Read the proposed bill- there are some sucky parts, but less sucky than it could've been.
