The European Commission issued an opinion on Friday recommending that Ukraine be granted European Union candidate status. Following Russia’s invasion, Ukraine is among a group of states seeking to join the bloc as quickly as possible, hoping to align themselves closely with the West and receive protection. But the decision to grant candidate status is the first step of a long and complicated process.

How close to membership? About 30 years away I would guess.
No, just because they are being attacked doesn't make them more eligible to join. There are good reasons they were rejected from applying before.

Let's not forget that all this is not new. Ukraine had already an Association Agreement with the EU since 2014(?) to implement reforms to align itself with the EU.
Serbia (including Kosovo), Montenegro, North Macedonia and Albania all have applied for EU membership. They are waiting for more than 10 years, it will be surprising if Ukraine cuts the queue!!!

Putin agrees as he said in St Petersburg Ukraine will need subsidising for many years to come and paying of its war debt to the USA.
Ukraine will have to allow citizens to speak Russian one of the rules of EU protection of minorities.

Ukraine is extremely far from meeting the requirements to join the EU and there is almost no chance that will change in coming years. If they join it will be mostly just to make a point against what Russia is doing. Other countries are far closer to meeting the technical requirements and have been candidates for many years and still aren’t allowed.

EU welcomes Ukraine to official pending list for membership of EU – EU have to sort out "corruption in Ukraine" and evaluate the threat to EU of Right Wingers (Faschists in goverment!) . EU is run by novices – will collapse- competition from East too powerful!.
I see a great future here. Not really in Ukraine releasing jailed opposition, recognizing minorities, getting rid of extrajudicial killings, but more in EU's willingness to ban free speech, sanction orthodox leader, militarize, ban free trade, etc. It is, after all, mainly about harmonization and who's to say Ukraine has to became like the EU, when it can clearly go the other way.

Then you add the human rights rapport from the OSCE 2014-2021 on SBUs systematic torture , abuse , abduction and killing of its own citizens.
Add a touch of killings from a list with people that are considered "persona non grata" by the government in Kiev (3 journalist,bloggers that wrote negative about the regime has been killed on the list. 1 was assasinated in his car with a gun)
And finally you season this with the fact that Ukraine will probably be in a state of territorial conflict with Russia that can break out at any moment and can force EU to an outright war with Russia.
The economic burden that Ukraine will find itself in if they lose the coastline and all the fertile soil in the east and factories will be hard to repair and will cost ALOT of EU funding (since the conflict is not over yet EU does not know what Ukraine will even look like)
That is the Ukraine that is currently beeing put on the scale and some want to give it full membership today?
