  1. 1950s. Great times. So long as you were white

P.S. the money making game can be won by (in order of profit v effort) hard work and good looks and sincere enthusiasm, or by blagged turd polishing and acting hype, or by reckless risk, cheating and hope.

  2. LP reacted d ryt way, she is vym.Monster need of over drama, or over consider ations. She don't deserve *considerationst. Lp പറഞ്ഞ പോലെ,, ജീവിതം തുടങ്ങിയല്ലേ ഉള്ളു, പഠിക്കട്ടെ.

  3. I actually really like their take on trans people in sports.

Mostly the overall (the entire point of sports is to find people with biologically advantageous genes) simplifies it.

  4. Lol, of course, just saw my first tic toc ad & the things people “learn” on there. I’m sure it has nothing to do with the new information coming out about tic toc still being connected to China. Great conversation gentlemen. Charlie! What you’re doing with D&D, sounds very cool, & an idea I was writing about in my notes based off a D&D style game my friend had made. It sounds like you’re building virtual representations of the game so you can see actions etc. played out? When I was laying it out, realized it’s soooo much work. Awesome you’ve got the resources to do so.

  5. Hey Charlie and Ben! Love the podcast.

Charlie's take on transgender athletes is interesting. It hits on an aspect of unfairness in sports that I agree with. However, I want to offer a different perspective.

If I understand correctly, Charlie thinks that there are many reasons why sports are unfair for different people. Gender is one of them, but so is height, reaction time, twitch muscles, etc. So why are we specifically outraged about gender?
This is a fair point. Maybe we should have different categories besides gender, which would be an interesting separate conversation as to how. But for now, the arbitrary separation we have is gender.

The issue with a biological male competing against a female is about the rules. The rules in women's sports allow for many biological variations, but sex is not one of them (well I have not read the rules of every sport, but this is how it is commonly understood). Losing to a biological male is unfair, and not in the same way that losing to a genetically gifted female is unfair. It is unfair because there is an understanding that this should not be allowed.

I want to add that Charlie and Ben have (what I think is) a great take on student loan forgiveness. You guys approach it from 2 different angles.
    1. Why spend money forgiving student loans in particular? Why not spend money where it would help the most?
    2. Sometimes, taking out student loans is a poor financial decision that should have some level of financial consequence. Why is that consequence being relieved? What about the person who understood that loans would be a poor decision, and did not go to college?

Point #1 is looking at the big picture and questioning why this is happening at all, when there are other issues. I think this is similar to Charlie's take on transgender athletes. Why gender? Why not other unfair aspects? I think that applying point #1 here to government spending makes sense because there are several obvious ways to better spend the money. However, with sports, fixing the unfairness issue is much harder and runs into lots of other issues (viewership, smaller categories, confusion among athletes and fans, it will still be arbitrary anyway, etc.).

Point #2 is asking why are we dealing out rewards in a strange way? Why are we rewarding college goers, and punishing other disadvantaged groups (since the money now can't go to them)? This is similar to the perspective I have on transgender athletes. Allowing biological males to compete with females is rewarding some biological males who have gender dysphoria, while punishing females who thought they would be competing against biological females. And this is only a recent thing that is happening, meaning that women who have trained their whole life suddenly have to deal with competitors who are violating a primary assumption about the sport, and benefitting from it at the woman's expense (similar to student loan forgiveness being at the expense of other disadvantaged groups).

That was a lot but I'm curious to know what you think about this perspective!

  6. I think regards to the Jordan Peterson argument about Casual Sex.
Charlie mentions that Peterson doesn't explain the difference between Casual Sex and other casual activities like getting an Uber, massage etc.
This could be just me and I would have thought that the answer is obvious.
Sex can lead to pregnancy and disease.
In this day and age, humans have a lot more control over these factors.
For thousands over years, women died in child birth at relatively high rate, much higher than the rate today.
Also, falling pregnant meant having a child before modernity abortion wasn't an option.
In my opinion, these factors are part of the human psyche and culture.
I do think Peterson comes out with crazy comments, in this podcast recently he said "You wouldn't give your sister an abortion for her birthday".
    I think thats crazy.
Whether one agrees with Peterson with regards to Casual Sex, I don't think it is a ridiculous argument.

  7. I'm with Charlie on the "30 years from now the answer to the trans question will be obvious". Whether or not being gay was a choice used to be a contentious issue, and now it's obvious that being gay is not a choice.

One might counter with "Well abortion used to be contentious and still is." That's true, but the difference (in my eyes) is that abortion is a moral issue, whereas whether or not being gay is a choice is a logical/scientific issue. I think figuring out the correct age(s) for trans people to transition is in that second category.

Definitely agree with Ben in the short term though. People will use data selectively to bolster their point as long as they can.

  8. The Maine school voucher decision is due to there being NO public schools being available in the area. I doubt it's going to be a problem for the rest of America.

  9. There is study from the British Journal of Sports Medicine on the effect of gender affirming hormones on athletic performance in transwomen and transmen. The study uses a smaller sample size than I would like, but they found that transwomen maintained a 15-31% performance advantage over their female counterparts.

  10. Hi, I want to start off by saying I am a big fan of the podcast. I noticed lately in myself that I have a craving to be strong/in control of situations. For me, it is like a feeling of euphoria when I am in control or strong for even a bit. It is starting to such the joy out of all other things, as I start to get bored when doing other things I have liked for a long time and to try to get another feeling of power. I have been trying to look at some of my childhood experiences (even though I am only 15) and I think it might stem from me feeling weak in my childhood. However, I haven't been able to stop the craving. Is there any advice you would give to help me stop wanting feelings of power/control so much?

  11. I still don't agree with Charlie's points on trans athletes, but I know there was a female runner who had insane levels of test (naturally) and I think the Olympic committee made her take suppressors. Look at her photo and she looks like a man.

  12. I love the podcast. And Everything everywhere all at once is indeed a masterpiece, don't let anyone fool you. Personnally tho my favourite is blade runner 2049 😉
