European Union energy ministers have reached an agreement on an emergency proposal requiring member states to cut their gas use by 15 percent from August to March in the face of concerns about the reliability of Russian supplies in the coming winter.

“Member states today reached a political agreement on a voluntary reduction of natural gas demand by 15% this winter,” the European Council said in a statement.

Gazprom, Russia’s state-controlled gas giant, announced on Monday it was halting the operation of one of the last two operating turbines of the Nord Stream 1 pipeline due to the “technical condition of the engine”. Deliveries to Europe via the pipeline were to be reduced to 33 million cubic metres a day – about 20 percent of its capacity – from Wednesday.

Last year, Russian gas accounted for some 40 percent of the EU’s imports of the energy source. Concerns in the bloc over energy supplies, especially gas, have increased as Russia curtailed deliveries in recent months amid the war in Ukraine, seen as retaliation for Western sanctions.

    1. Portugal, a country perfectly suited for wind and solar farming, is still relying on imported gas for its cooking and heating. Finally, they are forced to rethink – as are many other EU countries. I am somewhat happy about the gas crisis as it finally forces governments to take serious actions towards sustainable energy consumption. After 30 years of empty phrases about "reducing per capita energy consumption" all it took was an angry Putin and a "gas leak" to get things rolling. It's true that the European mindset is that of some presumptuous, hypocritical, selfish snobs but that is hopefully starting to change now.

    2. You are claiming on cutting Russia gas… be content that Russia is still delivering… some how I wish they would just cut it off so we can move on without you complaining.

    3. I think because Russia considers women, children, old people as military targets; IMO I think the gas pipe that exports Russian oil is also a military target & should be destroyed (as holding the world hostage again & constant lying is getting old (let's all do a Russian & LIE to the world)).

    4. Even though I understand Putin is cutting gas supply to cause problems, I also understand it's to save face, since everywhere he's cutting was going to move away from Russia as a gas supplier anyway as part of the intervention-esque sanction approach aimed at encouraging Putin to be a good sport, and stop bombing his neighbour.

    5. Please EU stop crying as usually destroying Russian economy with your sanctions then you expect Russian cheap gas for you to continue living comfortable it doesn't work like that my only worried is im also paying the price of this European bad leadership High Cost of Living

    6. Arrogant hypocrisy. West(US, EU) always thinks they are "world". If a decision made by the "world" , the world should follow. Remember, the world is not "world"

    7. The WEST USA AND UKRAINE IS AT WAR WITH RUSSIA YET THEY WANT RUSSIAN GAS, OIL AND COAL
RUSSIA SHOULD EVEN STARVE THEM UNTIL THEY SHOW SOME RESPECT

    8. This is the same EU who have been threatening to cut off their gas imports from Russia. So why cry foul now when Russia decides to hasten it for to? Also what did they expect after the barrage of economic sanctions against Russia? Please get off your high horse EU.

    9. These EU leaders are so stupid. They are talking like idiots. They provoke and sanction Russia. And they also kept sending artillery to Ukraine.
They have stupidly forgotten that they have made themselves the enemy of Russia. Yet,they have the audacity to complain that Russia is not supplying gas to them.
This is idiocy to the next level!
