Russian President Vladimir Putin has threatened to cut all energy supplies to Europe. Putin was responding to a question about EU plans to put a cap on Russian gas supplies, at an economic forum in the Russian city of Vladivostok. He also sought to justify Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and criticised what he called western fever over sanctions. Our Europe correspondent Simon McGregor-Wood has more.

EU leaders keep telling their people how Russia is suffering from sanctions while their own people are also suffering frim those sanctions. Why would a German citizen who cant pay his gas bills give a flying F about Russian economy?

Just forget about oil & gas from Russia. Just forget about it and plan on not using it ever again. Will it be hard? Sure, but this is war. Is this just war between Ukraine and Russia? Not even close. Ukraine is fighting the war to protect all the rest of us from what happens next. Ukraine is taking the beating, loosing family members and homes and friends and whole neighborhoods, cities and towns. They are taking the beating for all the rest of us. No oil or gas is a problem, but we can stay with each other, help each other, live with less, walk more, figure out new ways for ourselves and our countries. Everytime the US and Europe impose sanctions on Russia they end up hurting themselves. Time to apologize to Russia and prepare a compensation package. Maybe western countries could tell Ukraine to pay for the weapons they got and use that money to compensate Russia.
