Spain is one of the few countries that does not depend on Russia for its gas supply. Spain not only has a very diversified network of suppliers: it also has two gas pipelines connecting it to Algeria. All this gas could be resold to Europe to replace a proportion of Russian imports.

However, relations between Spain and Algeria are at their worst in decades. A series of questionable diplomatic moves have caused Madrid to sacrifice the opportunity of becoming a European natural gas hub.

But what exactly happened and what does Morocco have to do with all this? In this video we tell you.

    1. Maybe it's not about gas at all. Morocco has a project underway already with the UK to supply solar farmed electric (the cables are already being laid). If that's the path that they're going down in the future then Spain could be the doorway to Europe for that instead. That could explain the stance on Western Sahara as well.

    2. Are not gas pipes on the sea floor easier/cheaper to lay than over land? Why not go straight from Algeria to Genoa? Whatever happened to Israel's gas line to Greece?

    3. I disagree, I think Spain did the right thing. Itโ€™s acting in its own self-interests and itโ€™s also the least we should do for Morocco. As an American, I can say our governmentโ€™s decision to recognize Western Sahara as Morocco a few years ago was actually a pretty popular decision. And no, it had nothing to do with Israel. There are historical claims at play (Almoravid & Almohad Kingdoms). We should be nicer to countries like Morocco.

    4. why doesnt this channel talk abt the slavery and dark history the european countries has ? ifc they wont. its a propaganda machine of the europeans

    5. What foolery is this? What interest would Morocco have in an uninhabited island a stone's throw away from its shores? How about claiming its territorial waters. It's part of the territorial disputes between Spain and Morocco, that also include the Spanish colonies of Ceuta and Melilla.

    6. what about portugal and the port of sines, germanyand its prime minister even supported a pipeline between portugal and germany

    7. As the economy crisis keep rising, one needs to have different streams of income, a well detailed diversified investment portfolio in the financial markets is needed to survive, as well as secure a profitable investment future!

    8. One Big Note: Why the hell you said "islamic terrorism"? Islam has nothing to do with terrorists, would u like that someone uses the term "Christian terrorist" or "Agnostic terrorist" ??! Really not cool at all

    9. you r looking at it as economical crap , WE R LOOKING AT IT AT OUR LAND BEING CLAIMED BY RANDOM PPL THEY R NOT EVEN 20K PPL AND TRYING TO DEVIDE A 40M COUNTRY. we don't see the same. keep ur rational decisions to urself.

    10. Completely wrong. The reason Spain sided with Morocco on the Sahara issue is because they struck a deal with Morocco for them to stem the flow of sub Saharan migrants into Spanish enclaves Melilla and Ceuta.

    11. IF I was Morocco or Algeria or any country with lots of gas, I would keep it for my own country.
One day (maybe in 100 or 200 years) your people will need gas.
