Altcoin is the term used to describe digital assets that are not Bitcoin, such as a coin or token. The ERC-20 tokens that exist on top of the Ethereum blockchain are the most well-known examples. Many of these altcoins were created as modified copies of Bitcoin via the Hard Fork process.

Hard forks are software updates that are incompatible with previous versions. These typically occur when nodes add new rules that conflict with the rules of older nodes. New nodes can only communicate with other nodes that are running the updated version. As a result, the blockchain splits into two networks: one with the old rules and one with the new rules.
