So, Russia sanctions Europe over gas (preventing Europe from buying gas from them), but China undermines Russia's sanctions in order to profit from European gas demand. As long as Europe has high gas demand, we are likely to empty posturing from the US rather than action. However, Europe will resolve these contradictions in the near term by limiting the gas demand, at which point we will likely see secondary sanctions affecting all nations that refuse to sanction Russia. Even now, the US and Europe may be gearing up for secondary sanction against those nations that reject the price cap. Once that happens, India with have to pay less for Russian oil, meaning that Indian consumers will be forced to benefit from lower energy bills. When this happens, the sanctions will indeed not work in an absolute sense, in that some nations will likely continue to buy from Russia. But Russia will need to discount their products considerably in order to make up for the lost Western trade that the sanction-rejecting nations will experience, thus reducing their revenues. When assessing the impact of sanctions, we need to be realistic about what they can and cannot do. The most powerful sanction against oil and gas is the same as the sanction against the slide rule; they are becoming obsolete.

Yes, you are correct, but that same oil is running Europe's economy to build more military equipment. The same military equipment is then sent to Ukraine to defend against Russia. So Russia is infact indirectly funding its own demise.
