Will the EU put in place a long-term energy strategy? | Inside Story

European energy ministers have failed to agree on a plan to cap Russian gas prices at an emergency meeting in Brussels.
The session aimed to consider how to shield households and businesses from soaring energy bills.
EU energy commissioner Kadri Simson says countries heavily reliant on Russian supplies fear they will be cut off altogether.
President Vladimir Putin had earlier threatened to make Europe ‘freeze’ this winter if a cap is agreed.
So what are the options? And are the measures already taken enough to get the bloc through the winter?
Presenter: Imran Khan
Guests:
Sandrine Dixson-Decleve – Energy climate researcher and co-author of ‘Earth for All: A Survival Guide for Humanity’

Clive Moffatt – Founder and chairman of the cross-industry UK Energy Security Group and a former UK government energy adviser

  1. Alot of big talks and brave fronts from EU leaders while unwittingly committing suicide…But it will not change the reality on the ground…The worst is yet to come and in the long run, European industries will be hollowed out and less competitive. There will be civil unrest. This guy said Europe has reduced its sources of gas from 40% before the invasion of Ukraine by Russia to 9%. Really? Where is the 31% coming from? When are the European leaders gonna think rationally? When it is too late….? Europe had cheap Russia gas and oil but it had to cut of its nose just to spite Russia….This is hilarious…

  2. When I was young we used coal gas. The jets had to be in our changed in our cookers when we switched to natural gas But I remember my chemistry teacher saying it is a waste using natural gas As it is better used as a feedstock for the chemical industry

  3. … if you do not depend on the producers of the commodity, how do you get the supply? Diversify suppliers does not take away dependence on…. You are screwed… you do not own any production.

You decided to cut off your arm to spite a bad habit… now you are incapacitated and cannot do work to earn a living. Now, how is that working for you?

  4. The citizens of Europe are protesting the west and NATO. Now the citizens must pay for the elites to have their way. Leaders have no business leading while putting offering up citizens lives. STOP digging deeper when your already in a hole.

  5. Europe is falling. The economy and all across Europe will pay exponentially. Jobs will be lost, and will only be added to the great economic down turn of the pandemic. Europe is not ready to go green, and as you have seen with the great dry season recently, anyone can bet it's comming again.

  6. Democracy is not cheap and it's difficult to explain that to cold people, but if you're not prepared to suffer some for freedom, remember you'll surely suffer much more under a tyrannical system

  7. Well those three guests on the show were horrible, they were looking after their own selfish interest of profits, they gave no good examples for the public to save money on their heating bills, and it's fascist and communist to make people pay more for less energy. And these energy companies should pay for their own hardware upgrades cheap bastards.

  8. .What if you died tonight, what would you do, what after death, were we created in vain, why were you born in this family, why not this, why you look like this and not like this, where do you go when you sleep and where were you before you were born, and the wonders of metabolism and heaven existed like this without a creator.. who brought Adam And what was the constraint of that.. Ask yourself… God is one, God has no equal, God has no children.. Say, I seek refuge in God from the accursed Satan, and search for God

  9. My solution for this energy crises is to heat the houses for winter, temporarily cut down industries and divert the energy to household consumption. Another suggestion I have is to do more research on the magnetic field that is all around us. Harness this magnetic field energy for any moveable vehicles, trains, ships and even aeroplanes. Completely ban all Russian energy, until Putin submits to our demands. It's already fleeing from Ukraine and will soon surrender to Zelansky and the western nations

  10. Europe needs Russia as Russia needs Europe. Ukraine will not benefit from an economically strangled Russia or an unstable Europe in recession. EU leaders miss the big picture.

  11. The British govt should offer an even greater price cap but only for households, landlords and businesses that meet certain parameters of need. They might also wish to impose a temporary rent control so that millions aren't booted out of their flats as landlords raise their rent to offset gas price hikes. It's a thorny issue. Another idea would be for the UK to scrap the whole solidarity hypocrisy – as it backed even worse and more murderous invasions in the last few decades than Ukraine – and just import as much Russian gas as they can on the cheap.

  12. YOU WILL OWN NOTHING AND BE HAPPY. It's all about control of the masses certain individuals are making billions out of others misery . Nuclear power is the only long term answer but that to would be controlled by the wrong people.

  13. How did Europe entangle itself in matters that are not of their concern. Ukraine brought disaster upon itself guided by US. The EU being a puppet vassal state of the US played along to antagonize Russia. Slowly the US is distancing itself from the Ukraine and Europe situation. The US is no longer interested in the conflict other than selling weapons. Europe is left with the mess. The only way to save face for Europe is to prolong their confrontation with Russia at the expense of their economy. This EU chairperson has no direction and no solutions for the mess she costs. The only thing she relies on is EU unity, that's all. How can unity be an effective energy economic plan? Even the price cap relies on unity plan not tangible solution to replace Gazprom Russia gas. If unity works, the African Union world have defeated European and the US neocolonialism long time ago

  14. For EU to deal with long term energy costs the EU will need to cap the USA and opec oil and gas, remember as of December the EU themselves have declared that they will not use Russian oil and gas.

  15. How much in world does just oil, gas and coal go towards heating and lighting, How much oil, gas and coal go towards manufacturing and contents of any product eg welding

  16. Discussing analysis and solutions with underlying anti-Russian sentiments is definitely leading to polarized outcomes. The EU is heading toward joining the third world. Western political mindset is very hypocritical and underestimating and undermining Russia will be to its own demise. Brace yourselves for the economic & financial meltdown early next year.

  17. If Energy giants want to use tax payers money for a bailout they should then either turn the bigger majority of shares over to the people OR give shares to every house hold it's time they learnt like any other business if the price goes up for your commodity you then have to start dipping in to your savings (profit margin) for far to long now they've been getting it both ways.

  18. No Oil & Gas can be Generated overnight OR Compensated with Alternate Energy Option by Europe …………Russia found substitute market & economics to oil price cap issue……….Similarly countries dependent on fossil fuel supply has already made their mind to buy cheap oil whether caped or not because they cannot afford OPEC price and monopoly …………Affordability is Bottomline for the Buyers….
World Oil & Gas Market has divided vertically to rush for better option…. After Second World War & Industrial Revolution Europeans are always surplus with food, energy, technology etc are facing scarcity for the first time which seems they don't have experience & expertise to handle……Europe is facing drought like Chinese & Economic Disaster and Higher Inflation……..are heading towards Similar Directions….

  19. If these politicians truely wanted Europe to rely less on Russia and reduce thier carbon footprint in the process they would be looking into nuclear power plants!

  20. Nuclear, more nuclear, fission and fusion etc. These are real power sources unlike Solar or Wind (which will never work, and pollute the environment on a stupid scale, not to mention kill more people than any of the good power sources) and we also have MSRs aka Molten Salt Reactors.

  21. Start producing your own gas and oil again idiots. Stop blaming the US for your stupidity. Drill and build stuff. It's the only way until you actually figure out the renewable energy.
