The war in Ukraine has triggered a European energy crisis that threatens the global economy. Canada finds itself powerless to step in and help replace Vladimir Putin’s natural gas supplies in time, leaving Europe at the mercy of a dictator who has weaponized his country’s energy.

A growing group of world leaders, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, along with environmentalists and energy executives are trying to find a way to help. But is it too late?

Have politics and policy handcuffed our ability to export clean natural gas, indirectly empowering leaders like Putin?

Watch the special airing on Friday at 9pm ET.

Landlocked: Canada’s Energy Dilemma takes a hard look at the cost of Canada’s ambitious carbon targets and the collateral damage it has caused to our energy sector, threatening its ability to be a player on the international stage.

    1. Big Oil at record profits yet the WEF wants all to pay more. Canadians should be paying less due to Keystone not being allowed by Biden. Oh and our tar sands are only profitable when oil price is high. It is well into the 'high' category now.

    2. The key to all the Ukraine/oil issue is the Laviathan energy field owned by Turkey, Israel and US BIG OIL. plan is to develop it and have flow thru Ukraine to cut off Russian sales. Problem now being addressed is self-serving neo-nazis in Ukraine and Russia

    3. Canada has the fourth largest oil reserves in the world and in the top ten when it comes to natural gas. At the current rate of oil extraction we have oil for the next 300 years. Canada is just unwilling to use its bountiful natural resources and sell them due to mislead climate believes. While the Gulf states are enriching themselves with the same fossil fuels Canada has, Canada is facing a massive economic downturn. Absolutely insane and irresponsible politics in Ottawa! Fossil fuel use and extraction is globally on the rise and will increase at least for the next 50 years.

    4. We would all do well to remember who actually benefits from selling our resources and being some energy "superpower". Selling resources overseas doesn't mean much to the average person with some exceptions like the current European case.

    5. yeah but fortunately we can swoop in and save em' with gas. then they owe us one.
if they had gas we would not have that opportunity.
so what if they just turn the gas back on as a plot twist – but you already sent the gas

    6. The title of this video is funny. A country with long coastlines in East, North and West is being called "Landlocked". 😂

What would have been a more suitable word here? OverAnalysis?

    7. We need to look at world wide sources of natural gas. What are the options? What about Norway which is close by? Before saying Canada is the answer, we need to look at the whole picture.

    8. If Canada was to completely ignore emissions reductions, it means less than 2 percent of world emissions. Replacing coal in Asia alone would reduce emissions many times that.

    9. I found this reporting to be very biased in favour of the oil companies interests.
There was no mention of the history where PET was trying to make a National Energy Policy that would have built pipelines to Quebec. It would also make Petro Canada as Canada's national oil company.
There was also reference to equalization payments with no explanation of their purpose.
The reporting only referenced oil company executives, experts out of Calgary and Conservative premiers. There was no balance to their reporting!

    10. Just blow the world up and that will solve all the problems. Russia didn't weaponize
energy…..you put sanctions against them. Are they not allowed to slap back???? Just nuke the world…no more climate crisis….and ask Canadian leader why the turbines are still being held???

☝❗The Secretary General of the United Nations stated that Ukraine has not submitted a request for border registration since 1991, so the state of Ukraine does not exist… And we don't know about it! 04/07/2014. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon made a stunning statement, the distribution of which is prohibited in the Ukrainian media and on the Internet. The conflict between the two countries was discussed at the UN Security Council session. The following conclusion was drawn from this: Ukraine has not registered its borders since December 25, 1991. The UN has not registered the borders of Ukraine as a sovereign state. Therefore, it can be assumed that Russia does not violate rights in relation to Ukraine. According to the CIS Agreement, the territory of Ukraine is an administrative district of the USSR. Therefore, no one can be blamed for separatism and the violent change of Ukrainian borders. According to international law, a country simply has no officially recognized borders. To solve this problem, Ukraine must complete the demarcation of its borders with neighboring countries and obtain the consent of neighboring countries, including Russia, on their common border. It is necessary to document everything and sign agreements with all neighboring countries. The European Union promised to support Ukraine on this important issue and decided to provide all technical assistance. But will Russia sign an agreement on the border with Ukraine? Of course not! Since Russia is a legal successor of the USSR (this is confirmed by the decisions of international courts on property disputes between the former USSR and foreign countries), the countries of Ukraine, Belarus and Novorussia belong to Russia and no one has the right to dispose of this space except Russia. Basically, now all Russia has to do is declare that this area is Russian and that everything that happens in that area is an internal matter of Russia. Any interference from outside will be considered a measure against Russia. On this basis, Russia can annul the Ukrainian elections on May 25, 2014. According to the Budapest Memorandum and other agreements, Ukraine has no borders. The state of Ukraine does not exist (and has never existed!).

    12. So let me tell you about Alberta in the past 3 or 4 years, we try to expand a pipeline to give us more access to the west coast and it was met with protests and a long-drawn-out court battle with the indigenous causing massive delays and cost of the project. we try building pipelines to the south and Biden scrapped as soon as he came in office costing billions of waisted tax dollars. what makes you think we can ramp up production to the all the way to the east coast and overseas to help Europ? We'd have more luck taking a pipeline and shoving it up Trudeau's rear.

    13. Putin doesn't understand free nations as well as free nations understand despotism.

We're more likely to turn our guns on him and take hat we need rather than cut support for Ukraine and live under his dominion.

    14. Wowzers , that intro was like a horror flick trailer. Scared the crap outta me. Was that necessary to deliver the news? 😩😂

    15. I REMEMBER THE 47 PERSONS BURNED ALIVE IN LAC-MEGANTIC.

ALBERTA IS LANDLOCKED AND WILL REMAIN SO. IT IS WELL DESERVED, THEY MUST BE PUNISHED FOR THE 47 MURDERS.

    16. IF anybody is weaponizing energy it's Trudeau, Canada has so much energy we could easily supply all of the EU with cheap clean energy, BUT we have Trudeau who hates the west and fossil fuels and who is owned by the WEF, so basically he says Europe can freeze.

    17. Russia is a Clog in the Global Delivery System. Canada is Right across the River called The Northwest Passage. You can all pretend the Ice didn't melt due to Climate Change. China's marching. Do the math.

    18. As an Alberta tradesman with the pipefitter welding skills and decades of experience from well head to refinery. The only opportunity to share my skills is to leave Canada. Work in one of the many projects where infrastructure and trade skills are lacking. Albertan's need to become tfws and startup service companies elsewhere where our skills are required and life is affordable. Just as the rest of the world has come here for employment, we now must go there!

    19. Not news but one sided propaganda brought to you by Alberta and the fossil fuel industry. I’m not totally opposed to fossil fuel extraction. We are going to need it for awhile yet. But it’s much easier to set up fracking operations, and to do so in Europe, than it is to build a pipeline and the facilities to convert to LNG and the terminals to ship it across the Atlantic.

There’s also no mention of the effect the natural gas shortage will have on German industry. Instead we get an appeal to not let the Germans freeze this winter. I’m sure they’ll do OK because it’s not the Middle Ages. Instead we should be concerned about the decline of a world manufacturing power which will have a longer term effect on German citizens. Maybe our politicians should be looking at helping German industries set up in Canada close to the source of the energy they need instead of selling our resources to those outside the country like we have in the past.

Also no mention that France has a nuclear power industry and instead something about rationing and no adequate explanation given. Interview after interview of oil industry executives and anyone with a bias towards increasing our production of fossil fuels. This is second rate reporting but is to be expected from Global. What a waste of forty-five minutes.
