Revised EU regulations basically ban 8K TV sales along with some 4K QD-OLED, OLED, and QLED sets as well. Can anything be done to stop it? Here’s what’s going on.

    1. Hey everyone! Some important notes! 1. While some 8K TVs do exceed the efficiency standard by triple, many in the 65-inch range only double it. 2. I tend to conflate efficiency with consumption in my little rant here. Just because a TV is triple the EEI limit doesn’t mean it is consuming trriple the power. I regret the error. 3. I forgot to include the processor as another reason why 8K TVs draw so much more power – it’s not just the panel. 4. HUGE Thanks to FlatPanelsHD for all the research they did listing out individual EEI ratings for SO MANY TVs!

    2. Respectfully disagree with the message in this video. I don’t think the world needs 8K so badly at least by the time TV manufacturers find out how to make 8K TVs consume a similar amount of energy as current 4K TVs. And the same for QD-OLED which apparently is not such a huge quantum leap forward in picture quality. Just my humble 2 cents from the EU. 🙂

    3. Good, power bills are sky high in the EU as it is. Manufacturers have been ignoring the power consumption of their products for years. It is time governments take action.

    4. "The overwhelming majority of consumers never change their picture mode. They just use whatever it's set to out of the box." Holy Shit, that is disappointing. 😐

    5. Hot take: we are in a climate crisis and the least thing we need is more power sucking electronics. This energy has to come from somewhere and at some point I really feel like this should be the priority.

    6. No it’s not cancelled. Manufactures will simply implement a EU picture mode which turns everything off to stay below the power level requested. Users will still be able to switch the mode and crank it all up

    7. California and a few other states have already banned certain gaming pc's so I wouldn't be surprised if that policy comes to the USA.

    8. You mentioned some 65 inch QD-OLEDs being banned and pictured the Sony A95K. Ironically, it's the 55 inch variant that's going to be banned, but not the 65 inch one. Apparently, although they're the same model, they are in different energy efficiency classes.

    9. To be fair, im pretty sure us is 110v and here om EU and other parts of the world is 230v ish.

Samsung still used snap dragon for us and the shitty exynos for other parts of the world.

      Stupid thinking all around.

    10. Absolutely not a tree hugger, but I think it makes sense not to have a separate standard for 8k TVs. In the end they're all consumer TVs that will serve the same purpose. Absolutely agree with all the other stuff though like this affecting everyone else outside the EU and that there are better ways of conserving energy. Unfortunately, short of increasing energy prices, you cant force people to actually not waste energy. The only thing we can do is have devices that are efficient enough that even wasteful use is enough to meet targets.

    11. Luckily I saved already for a new TV, a A95K. I'm living in the Netherlands, so yeah … it's this year or never it seems to get a new QD OLED 65 inch. I'm waiting for Black Friday, to see if the price goes down somewhat more. Energy wise; my current Pioneer Kuro is slurping like 425 Watt. The QD-OLED at least half.

    12. We got here by greedily consuming most of the Earths resources. And when conservation cannot be achieved by self-restrained, I guess it must be mandated by governments.

    13. Hmm, our ~15yrs old Sony ‘flatscreen’ (it’s a chunky boi) draws around 270w, which is why we were looking for a replacement. I believe the G2 and A95K both use 85-110w (depending on HDR enabled or not), which is a lot lower than our current one. Announcing rules for those TV’s already being “too much”, sounds really ridiculous.

    14. 7:57 "what if TV's had energy saving feature like netflix are you still watching?"

They do… Every TV that i have used asks that every few hours or so, if you don't touch the remote, But that's in Europe…

    15. 7:15 hey big guy, Russia (their main exporter of energy) is at war with ukraine and threatning nuclear war on EU.. so thats why they are reducing energy costs, because this winter people are going to suffer .

    16. How much 8K content is available in the EU?
Is it even profitable for a manufacturer to sell 8K tv´s to the general consumer in the EU?

Almost all countries in the EU have strict emission standards and thoose standards will only increase as time goes by.

Therefore if a manufacturer wants to sell 8K TV´s, they need to find a solution for the watt usage.

    17. EU politics are a joke just like Joe Biden, they only care about themselves. About the more efficient TV's: my idea is easy and simple for people that don't care about their privacy, just implement a sensor that will recognize if you watch the TV (recognizing your eyes), problem solved on this part. . . but we know privacy is already gone for a long time now so many don't care anymore 😂

    18. They maybe seen Quantum TV settings Auto-cooking TV panels of 1800 nit capable and up then imagined the TV settings fallout from TV explosions & 55 inch Fire Hazards leading to cold in winter climate change possibilities of secret settings killing pixels around edges of OLED panels because heat physics are a complete mystery to him.

Imagine a 60yoa EU climate alarmist knowing basics,
But 'The Number 1 Brand in honesty' CEO doesnt?? Return the mans secret settings fee.

    19. well we all the best in our hand way before it was affordable and easy to produce, basically early adopting every year at insanely high prices, this will slow down the rate we get the tech but at least it should be the most refined and power efficient version that we get on shelves, i hope we get a good change out of this

    20. Connecticut was a poor example to cite in the car emissions parallel because it is a CARB state; that is, the same emissions rules that apply in California also apply there. The full list: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and Washington D.C. Minnesota, New Mexico, and Nevada are considering legislation to adopt the CARB rules. About 139 million people, over 40% of the population of the US, are currently covered by those rules.

When it was just California, car makers absolutely DID make separate versions of their cars for those states. Now that it's such a large percentage of the country, many cars now only have one version, and even if they have a second one it's likely to just be a change to the engine control software.

One big difference is that EVs are much more widely available in the CARB states. Tesla delivers to all states, and Chevy and Nissan sell EVs everywhere, but people in non-CARB states are unlikely to have nearby dealers that sell other brands of EVs. The companies need to push EV sales in the CARB states to meet the overall compliance targets of those rules.

    21. Imagine the millions of dollars TV companies spent on R&D for new models being completely pointless now smh. What I think will happen is what you alluded too. EU Market 4K TVs will come pre installed with dim mode. While North America, Asia ect will come Standard. What for sure this does is put a stop to new development of 8k TVs for the foreseeable future. So much for the price of those going down…. And most likely 8k TVs being pulled for ALL markets In a few years. This essentially pauses development of TVS probably for at least 3 to 4 years. So basically TV models being frozen for the next 5 years. Really sad stuff.
