How AI Could Empower Any Business | Andrew Ng | TED

Expensive to build and often needing highly skilled engineers to maintain, artificial intelligence systems generally only pay off for large tech companies with vast amounts of data. But what if your local pizza shop could use AI to predict which flavor would sell best each day of the week? Andrew Ng shares a vision for democratizing access to AI, empowering any business to make decisions that will increase their profit and productivity. Learn how we could build a richer society – all with just a few self-provided data points.

  1. Very well said, thanks Andrew. On the platform model, Question is how much does it cost the pizzeria or fabric factory owner to build an AI, compared to the delta revenue it brings them.

  2. This is what true educator looks like. the power to spread curiosity among listener using speech. After hearing this talk, it makes me wonder on how powerful AI could be if public masses start adopting it.

  3. My mind can barely comprehend the impact that this will have on SMBs. I'm very excited. I can't wait to work on this. Does anyone know which existing platforms he's referring to in this? I could see many companies cropping up that would offer a service of configuring these AI systems for a fee to SMBs. This could solve many problems and help people on the front lines of many different jobs! But, of course, those must be some very generalized models.

  4. 今、世界中の者達が、望むのは、正真正銘の、神様なのです。 しかしながら、もう、タイムオーバーなのです。 後は、世界破滅に、向うだけです。

  5. Andrew Ng never gets enough credit for the advances in AI over the years, but his push for making this revolutionary technology available to as many people as possible (first AI course available free on the internet!) and encouraging collaboration without care of political borders or academic paywalls has arguably done more for the field than any singularly developed algorithm has.

  6. Excellent synthesis. Very apt analogies. Looking at the tail end of the graph, I was reminded of the book "Fortune at the bottom of the Pyramid". He has become synonymous with AI and particularly ML.

  7. Can you envision a use for AI that isn't directly related to capitalists making money and further disempowering workers? Apparently not in this talk, which is all about helping businesses of various sizes figure out how to foist their products onto weary consumers.

  8. But the platform he said is just superficial not core for democratizing AI like a construction worker verses an architect.

    Did i misunderstand..?

  10. Just like the case was for literacy, it's difficult to make such small store owners understand that they should be using AI. They would just continue everything the way it's going. Besides, many owners would be hesitant to use something that can't explain its decisions. This brings us back to the problem of Explainable AI which i believe is super important if we want to make AI for everyone.

  11. It sounds great that we are thinking about building AI system for every individual to make their life more efficient and valuable. The way AI has impacted the whole industry is tremendous. It makes me amazed when I see the impact it's generating.

  12. Great talk, except for the use of the word "democratization" at the end. Does Andrew really mean that all the pizza makers should vote on which software to use and then force all the pizza makers to use that software? I don't think so. I think he wants each pizza maker to make his or her own decision. So what he wants to see if not "democratization", but capitalism or individual freedom.
