Scams, Zealots, and Jet Skis: Life Inside the Crypto Scene

Cryptocurrencies, NFT’s, and blockchain have attracted a lot of attention in the last few years. Bitcoin evangelists say it’s the way of the future; that it will replace central banks and become the world’s currency, divorced from corrupt politicians and hegemonic monetary policies. Sceptics say it’s a ponzi scheme akin to tulip mania and is destined to fail.

Even with the volatility of the currencies, crypto becomes mainstream every year. Legacy banks now consider it a currency of interest, El Salvador made Bitcoin a national currency, and many more common folks beyond the fratty bro scene have started to use it practically.

VICE Producer Zeke Spector has been investing in Crypto, mostly unsuccessfully, since 2017, when he put the remaining $198 he raised for his college thesis into Bitcoin and Litecoin. When it lost money, he hodl’ed. When it was up, he cheered. And then he sold, still making a profit, but like a fun profit. And then he bought the dip and lost some money. So he’s in the sceptical crowd, but willing to listen.

Zeke spirals down the rabbit hole looking to see if crypto is just another ponzi scheme thought up by the rich or a true game changer with benefits that allow the common person more autonomy and freedom over the financial system.

  1. All the people hating on Crypto are idiots. Crypto has been the single greatest thing invented in 50 years. If you are dumb enough to just listen to influencers and invest blindly in shitcoins and dumb NFTs you deserve to get wrecked. BTC has made me more money and generated more wealth for me than my web development job.

  2. If all of these ppl don't make your spidersense tingle everytime they start their pitch then you deserve to be ripped off by them…Everyone sounds so phony and the fact they have phony copies of already phony ripped off 'art' on his walls tells me all I need to know..

  3. The problem was, that there was too much FOMO and speculation and not enough attention to the actual technology behind it. I covered some of those topics in today's podcast episode on my channel with an expert on secured transactions….

  4. "Cryptocurrency is just a flash in the pan when it come to the adoption/application/scaling of blockchain technology. While everyone is distracted by the glitz and glam of crypto, engineers and developers partnering with interested parties are creating new applications, that are quickly adopted and becoming new cultural phenomenons that are becoming the new gold rush. Crypto is truthfully a very small and honestly unimportant aspect of the over tech. When you consider the invention of blockchain is one of the most important technological advancements since the invention of the internet. BLOCKCHAIN, A.I., FUSION, QUANTUM MECHANICS are the future. The matrix is almost ready to become self aware."

  5. these all lost the plot, and live in some fantasy world where they fight economic terrrorism.
people gettting more and more nutters.

also bitcoins have zero value without a actual currency to trade for.

  6. Getting in on the beginning based on info from being part of a special group with money,, isn't that same as insider trading? Buying real goods either coins is laundering. Am I dumb?

  7. The Miami Bitcoin 2022 was filmed early April, when Bitcoin was 45k.

Now it's 16k. These idiots have lost more than 70% of their wealth.

  8. Right now I have no desire to get involved in crypto. The fall of FTX has me convinced it's all a scam, and that the only real way you make money with it is to actually be involved in a scam, or to dump at just the right time. It's nothing more than a casino, really. I'd rather be "left behind" with my traditional money, than invest my families savings in generally what equates to a higher risk stock market, or to buy a bunch of stupid pictures that have no real value.

  9. Crypto will bring generational wealth to those who understand it and invest. Internet has decentralized education, you can learn for free today what would have cost you thousands to learn. Crypto will do the same but with the financial world. Decentralized finance, no middleman. Banks and billionaires are against this and will continue to spread FUD pay it no mind! Secure your future

  10. I watched this documentary 2 times and I felt like I missed out. None of these so-called "crypto gurus" were actually able to explain "What is BITCOIN". They kept criticizing the fiat system and the Central banks. I think that's a red flag right there. I have come to an understanding that Crypto Currencies are all scams, They will become obsolete. They are all pump-and-dump schemes fueled by prominent people like Elon Musk.
