In Lithuania an explosion has damaged a key natural gas pipeline. Flames up to 50 meters high were seen shooting from the Amber Grid pipeline in northern Panevezhees county. The pipeline’s operator said it saw no indications of sabotage, but that supplies to northern Lithuania and to neighboring Latvia could be disrupted. No injuries have been reported, but a nearby village has been evacuated.

Lithuanian authorities are now conducting a probe into the explosion, with the cause still unclear. LRT reported that a local village of 250 people was being evacuated. The gas pipeline connects Lithuania and neighboring Latvia. “We plan to restore the gas supply in a few hours, in comparable amounts,” Amber Grid CEO Nemunas Biknius told journalists. “We plan that the clients will not feel an impact from this event.” He later said gas supply had been restored to Latvia. January 13th is Freedom Defenders Day in Lithuania. On this day in 1991, Soviet soldiers attacked Lithuania civilians shortly after the Baltic country gained its independence from the bloc, leaving 14 people dead in Vilnius.

    1. might be pure coincidence but the timing with Lithuania declaring independence from the soviet union which led to the collapse at the same date gives food for thought

    2. Good to see the Lithuanians are not shooting off their mouth and blaming Russia. Earlier. Lithuania tried to blockade Kaliningrad till the Russians said they will cancel Lithuania's independence. Then Lithuania dropped the blockade.

Lithuania has also tried economic warfare against China.

It is amusing that the weakest and most hopeless countries in Europe talk as if they are superpowers. They think they have some special immunity due to NATO membership.

    3. While Russia is doing it's special military operation, USA is keeping up with it's special pipeline operation. US trying to overwhelm Europe .

    4. everybody who has brain know putin did this. There is putins pipeline to china. Imagine how nice if its happening there with their pipeline. I can imagine and im happy with that

    5. I searched for the latest news on this. AP put out news, selected bits appear in lots of media. Some fuller versions, e.g. New Haven Register. "The fire was extinguished by midnight and the residents returned to their homes on Saturday" is part of it. "Defective welding seam" may be the cause, confirmation expected in a few days.

    6. Those pipelines seem to spontaneously combust a lot in recent times. Luckily, we have the US LNG to replace them, (althoufh 7 times more expensive)

    7. uh oh this means the end of the world to democrats. the earth cant handle this so we all need to eat bugs and die. to save the earth for no humans to live here.

    8. It happened on 13 January, a very special day to Lithuanians (Bloody January 1991), could be a "message" on this very special occasion. It's a shame the journalist doesn't say how many such accidents have happened in LT, at least I don't remember of a single one throughout my life . The pipeline is old, but it is well maintained. Let's wait for the investigation results.
