Repowering the world’s 2,400 coal-fired power plants (2TWe) with advanced fission or fusion emission-free heat sources by 2050 is the single largest carbon reduction opportunity on the planet. It would enable a clean and equitable energy transition by eliminating one-third of global carbon emissions while sustaining local jobs and reusing existing infrastructure and transmission lines to deliver abundant clean energy to billions of people. However, for the new generation of emission-free heat sources to have any meaningful impact on energy and climate, we must transform the cost, speed, and scale of how these projects are delivered. Megan Pulliam is the Chief Development Officer at TerraPraxis, a nonprofit that innovates, designs, and accelerates scalable, equitable solutions for neglected areas of the climate challenge. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
