California lawmakers on Monday approved the nation’s first penalty for price gouging at the pump, voting to give regulators the power to punish oil companies for profiting from the type of gas price spikes that plagued the nation’s most populous state last summer.

they'll just pay the fine and raise the prices to cover the fine. maybe they should lower the gas tax instead or do a gas tax holiday.

All it takes is the threat – then prices drop. And I'd guess that the Republicans pulled out the bit about fines and penalties and taxes.
These same lawmakers that pass gas taxes and force gas companies to make "special blends" that are not required in the other 49 states, the same lawmakers that restrict drilling for oil thereby cutting production, which in turn raises gas prices….and the idi0ts have the b@lls to question why gas prices are so high in California….but hey, we get what we vote for
Here's another idea. How about we reduce the salaries of these Govt workers and all public employees …and then reduce the taxes we need to pay for their useless jobs.
