Of late, The western world seems to have a solution for all its problems in two words. Price cap. Earlier, it was about capping the prices of Russian oil. G7 countries and all of Europe came to agree on a price cap on Russian oil which was meant to cut down Russia’s increasing revenues from energy exports. This time the price cap introduced is within Europe, by the European Union, on benchmark gas prices. The goal is to prevent the price hike that ailed Europe this year, and to shield Europeans from high energy prices in 2023. So what is this new price cap plan? What makes Europe seek out such a policy? And will it be effective?

Consider this. The U.S. sell LNG to Europe at 5 times the price they sell it for domestically. Do you think they will agree (even if they say so orally) to sell it to Europe at a cheaper price, determined by Europe? If you do, you should get your head examined.

The idea is dead even before it started. Russia, if it so wish, can continue normal supply when international prices do not exceed the price cap ( which is now actually lower than the price cap ) and stop its supply to the normal trade when it breaches the cap. Russia do not need to be a participant in this EU's childish game.

Can someone crack the numbers too see if eu gas cap price and us gas export prices match? Meaning gas price cap could be matched to make US LNG price competitive?
