Nobody ever asked for a total trade ban. Sanctions don’t work that way. The US set the tone saying that they would ban oil and then they negotiate with their partners to see what they can tolerate. The G7 has always been cautious about the impacts of sanctions on the global economy. The US even approved Russia to use SWIFT to participate in some of their grain sales. If completely shut off Russia there is no room to negotiate.

Just throwing this out there… for the USA, a military conflict with China along with Russia could damage them more than the US (I don’t know…).
