The leaks are suspected to have stemmed from unexplained and unnatural explosions, and the Council of the European Union has released a statement saying, ‘All available information indicates those leaks are the result of a deliberate act … Any deliberate disruption of European energy infrastructure is utterly unacceptable and will be met with a robust and united response.’

While some European leaders have accused Russia of being behind the explosions, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov denied its involvement and instead suggested the United States was behind it.

Natural gas is mainly made of methane, which can warm the atmosphere 80x more than carbon dioxide for the first 20 years after it is released. While water can absorb some of the methane that was released, experts expect that much of it is going into the atmosphere.
