Can someone explain: why updating the firmware on Ledger even if you don’t subscribe to their recovery key service would endanger you?
Rob, I agree with you but one correction. It wasn’t NovaWulf that introduced the retail clawbacks. It actually is the UCC that is pushing it. As a matter of fact, it is the UCC that has forbidden anybody involved in the auction from using clawbacks as part of their offers or negotiations.

How do we know our seeds are not already compromised? If we transfer our seeds from our ledger to a Tresor what prevents ledger from accessing your seed?

I will rather stay with ledger rather buying another one what if they come up with another backdoor
Ledger could have done things right, the seed is viewable in coldcard and passport foundation however it is protected by a double access pin with 2 word verification, and the seed does not leave the wallet it is seen only on the screen only, but ledger created a potential security hole and a model that depends on trust. For those reason get a coldcard Mk4 or a passport foundation wallet, ledger could have follow the path of cold card or passport. Do not through away the ledger, the ledger has some nice features like u2f ( Fido ) which can be use for 2 factor authentication. Keeping the seed on paper is not needed, the solution already exist, get 2 coldcard or 2 passports, put the same seed on both devices using the clone feature and store them on different locations, and the pins using a password manager. If something goes wrong like someone breaks into the house you will have a backup which you can easily duplicate to have another backup. And the thief not knowing the pin will not get the money, and if many bad entries the device self destructs.

The goverment are not going to let exchanges in the future ,let u move crypto to cold storage,only banks and goverment make the rules,the great unwashed will get screw over again

Nothing is safe. When you generate a paper wallet address and key online the site can record all the addresses and keys it generates. Then fleece them when funds are deposited. The only way is to get an offline random key generator. Even then the random key generator s/w could be generating a range of addresses and not be truly random unless we can analyse the code….
