This wasn't the first event in it, or the last. There was an ongoing dispute between Egypt and Israel because after nationalizing the canal Egypt refused to allow Israeli vessels to use it, which naturally had a significant negative impact on Israeli shipping. One of the lasting gains made by Israel from this war was that Egypt allowed their vessels to use the canal again, at least for the next decade.
