DR Congo’s faltering fight against illegal cobalt mines | AFP

Five thousand diggers pack tightly together at the bottom of a crater in southeastern DR Congo, swinging hammers and picks to prise chunks of speckled blue-gold ore from the earth. The huge pit in Shabara, about 45 kilometres (30 miles) from Kolwezi, is home to cobalt – a strategic metal found in abundance in the impoverished central African nation. But it’s also emblematic of a headache. The mining has been carrying on for years in flagrant violation of DRC laws and in defiance of the site’s owner, a subsidiary of mining and commodities giant Glencore.

  1. Ok, who else noticed the worker dancing for the camera on the right side of the screen @00:14??? 🤣 I swear! Humans and how they act once they know they are in the spotlight is universal!
Interesting part is, I partially learned of this from Joe Rogan podcast. What’s interesting about that is the guest claimed to have been the first one to shoot footage here: WHY is there someone dancing if it’s so illegal and off limits to outsiders? And if this ONE worker noticed the camera from that far away, surely others closer to him did also. Must have paid a few people a fortune to be snuck in and out again, alive.

  2. the working class need to stop now, and stand up against the rich, we outnumber them by a lot, if everyone in the world just stopped working for 1 month let us see what would happen.

  3. I have a problem with the word 'Artisanal'. I mean, come on!! these guys are doing some extreamly laborious manual labour for god sake. What is so 'Artisanal' about it? buy using a good sounding word you don't reduce their pain or make their lives any better.

  4. A lot of these mines are owned by China and they love slavery in modern times, trick the governments with loans so they can come in and buy up their land in return so they can own things there like mines.

  5. That’s great! Saving the planet and giving all those fathers and sons a new way of earning income. I think I’m going to buy a Tesla now. Look how happy tah guy is with his big rock!
