The rising global temperature must be restricted to well below a two-degree increase. It’s crucial to make electricity production carbon neutral as quickly as possible. Is nuclear power the new game changer for achieving this ambitious goal?

Kathryn Huff of the U.S. Department of Energy estimates nuclear power would need to be doubled, perhaps even tripled, for the world to reach its climate targets. At the Idaho National Laboratory, the largest nuclear power research center in the Western world, U.S. scientists are researching new types of nuclear power plants which are smaller, more efficient, and faster to build.

Turkey and Poland are both newcomers to nuclear power. A giant nuclear power plant with four reactors is currently being built on the Turkish Mediterranean coast, while in Poland, small reactors are planned throughout the country. The idea is simply to replace existing coal-fired power plants with nuclear power plants. New developments from the United States should help make that possible.

In Silicon Valley, Jacob DeWitte has founded Oklo, a startup aiming to reinvent nuclear power. He has the backing of prominent people, including Sam Altman, the co-creator of ChatGPT. Altman wants to take Oklo public. He believes nuclear power is needed to supply enough electricity for the AI revolution.

Russia is a key part of the conversation around nuclear power. The country is the world’s biggest player in the business in terms of building power plants, developing the latest technology, and supplying raw materials. But what does that mean for the future? One controversial issue is that despite sanctions banning the imports of gas, oil, or coal from Russia, uranium can still be imported.

    1. I have to say it, nuclear power is the gateway to severing our bond with the sun, with all stars.
An ever increasing understanding of physics will ultimately allow us to go beyond nuclear, including the star variant fusion.
Tapping the Higgs field for energy is the goal.
The Higgs predates our universe, provided the energy that gave rise to our universe.

    2. russia: Extremely politically motivated, has bad track for hiding fatal flaws, got a fanatic dictator and has shown to not shy away from brutal and deadly methods of "negitiation".
50% of the world: LGTM, approved.

    3. ALL industrial processes, including power generation should be placed deep underground or in Outer Space. The surface of the planet should be reserved exclusively for the habitation of humans and other species (which collectively constitute our ecologically-based life-support system). Natural nuclear reactors do exist underground. Why can't we also place our reactors underground to heat rocks and water and hence use that energy to provide power for residences. In the (inevitable) event of an 'accident', the radioactivity released will be safely contained.

    4. Any mention of climate should talk about causes: energy and material overshoot. And about tipping points triggered by overshoot.

Else it's just propaganda, business as usual

    5. So China, known for its very reliable long lived hardware build more nuclear plants then everybody else. I guess we can expect that some of them will pop in the coming 10-30 years.

I will make some popcorn and watch the world struggle…

    6. I totally believe in nuclear energy, however, I have never been so mistrusting of the US in my life, a country now hijacked by evil lobbies, hence acting as the main distabilizing (and declining) world power today. So I ask myself: what are really the invested interests behind the US pursuing nuclear energy? DW demonizing of Russia (and Turkey) doesn't surprise me a bit, Germany has become a lowly serf now, even bowing to US-led attacks on our energy infrastructure (Nordstream II, anyone out there still in denial?).

    7. Non-ecologically-based technology and a non-ecologically-based economy must be replaced with ecologically-based technology and an ecologically-based economy. Humans are NOT independent of the ecosystem. We are totally dependent upon the health, diversity, residence and capacity of our ecologically-based life-support system for our own survival. If that goes, we go. Humans are here to act as keystone species. We are here to serve the ecosystem, not the reverse. We are here to build up the ecosystem so that we may earn our subsistence by reaping the excess ecological productivity. Humans have only two responsibilities: First, to ensure the regeneration, health, diversity, resilience, capacity and integrity of the ecologically-based human life-support system for ourselves and our descendants so as to ensure our subsistence survival. Second, to propagate Terran life throughout the Universe wherever alien life cannot already be found. That's it!

    8. Local production and consumption of energy and other critical life-support needs is essential to democracy. Dependency on outside providers (whether they be big business or big government, foreign or domestic) means these outside providers own and control you. They control your beliefs, values, thoughts actions and your vote! Decentralization with connections to the network is the only way to go.

    9. I have seen no evidence that nuclear power is necessary. It might be useful in northern latitudes where solar won’t work as well but I don’t see the grid surviving at all at lower latitudes.
