Hello and welcome to Deepin Moments:The European Union is reportedly considering an extension of the emergency gas price cap introduced in February this year, amid concerns that the conflict in the Middle East and sabotage of the Baltic gas pipeline could push up gas prices again this winter.
Senior EU diplomats and officials said that despite falling energy prices and record-high EU gas reserves, gas supplies this winter could still be affected by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as well as potential vandalism of gas infrastructure.
Europe has been facing energy dependency issues, especially since the Ukraine crisis erupted. The EU is experiencing an unprecedented energy crisis in 2022 due to sanctions against Russia, a ban on energy imports from Russia, and temporary restrictive measures imposed by Russia on the EU market. The new Energy Efficiency Directive aims to reduce dependence on fossil fuels as well as to combat climate warming. This policy was introduced for both long-term and short-term reasons. Europe wants to reduce its dependence on Russian fossil fuels, as the energy dependence of EU countries on Russia has become one of the intrinsic drivers after the Ukraine crisis. Therefore, the new EU policy will further contribute to the growth of demand for new energy sources, including photovoltaics, hydrogen energy and wind power.
