Oil, gas and mining

A mine of sustainable initiatives for a just environmental transition

The mining sector is generally perceived as being polluting, corrupt and connected to Human rights violations, and yet it is also a crucial industry in the acceleration of the green transition. Renewable-energy technologies such as solar panels and windmills are built using a great variety of minerals which will have to be extracted in greater quantities and at greater speed to reach the Paris agreement goals. How do we reconcile the urgent demand for minerals and the current public reluctance towards the mining sector? This session will draw on concrete initiatives and ideas from actors around the world working to ensure that the mining of these crucial minerals is responsible and respectful of the rights of the affected communities for a just environmental transition.
