North Korea’s Kim Jong Un is Stealing Cryptocurrency | If You’re Listening | ABC In-depth

As international sanctions have cut into North Korea’s ability to import and export things, they’ve become desperate for cash.

They’ve been running crazy schemes to get it – smuggling, stealing, lying, cheating, swashbuckling – but that’s nothing compared to what they make from stealing cryptocurrency.

In fact, most of their foreign currency now comes from stolen crypto.
So, can anything be done to stop the world’s first nuclear-armed crypto bro, Kim Jong-un?

Matt Bevan takes a look.

  1. love the presentation! but to be fair, real life is the real comedian. every single side story is a joke by itself, like after the obama speech hollywood started to self censor for a dictator that didn't even demanded it, tough sanctions on nk only came after a mad man like trump threatened total destruction, wanna cry hitting chronically underfunded public services the hardest (killing random innocent people) while no big company had to pay ransom, etc. RL is really the funniest show ever

  2. You see, the infantile restrictions that the West imposes on capital flow into communist countries because "red under the bed", the insane ethos of the Cold War, means that communist countries must either lick the boots of western institutions or get capital illegally. If we simply decided to treat North Korea as another country, all this would disappear. But, hey, the Empire must be maintained at any cost, even if Australians must relinquish sovereignty.
The thing about our democracy is that we always get dickheads who have sold out to the Empire.

  3. Just like this country. While the people struggle and continues to pay more for less our leaders continue living the high life while increasing their wealth on the back of others.

  4. crime is committed with every currency that exists.

People who get their crypto stolen clearly don’t understand the responsibility that comes with owning this kinda of currency

  5. Funny thing about North Korea is that they live like the progressives want us to live. No energy, no diversity of opinion, and all power in the hands of an elite.

  6. The piece doesn't really touch on how the North Koreans convert that crypto into cash. That's a key thing for the UN to focus on. BTC has no value to them if it can't be cashed out. The whole thing should be banned for eternity.

  7. The American have been stolen oil, gold, land, money, just about everything. The Bristish just as worse. France, Australia, all stolen. but North Korea. Kim is the worst and we need to call him out.
