Will renewables stop the climate crisis? | DW Documentary

Mankind is facing the greatest upheaval since industrialization. To stop climate change, the energy system must be transformed worldwide and fossil fuels must be completely replaced. But is this even possible?

Time is running out. If climate targets are still to be met and the survival of future generations is to be ensured, virtually all fossil energy sources worldwide will have to be replaced by renewables by 2050. That leaves us with almost exactly one generation from today to make this massive change. So what needs to happen for the global energy transition to succeed?

Part 1 of this two-part documentary looks at the question of whether it’s even possible to provide enough green energy for the whole world. How can the oil economy be replaced? The film travels to places that could one day become the Saudi Arabia of renewable energies. For example, gigantic offshore wind farms in the North Sea, or the most modern solar fields in Spain. One day, these regions will supply all of Europe with electricity.

However, the globally increasing demand for energy must be met in ways that are both sustainable and affordable. Researchers at the Technical University of Ilmenau in Thuringia are working with a team from the California Institute of Technology on high-tech materials that will make renewable energies more efficient and less expensive than their fossil fuel predecessors.

  1. Renewables are hilarious to watch,
Electric cars drawing electricity from coal plants X 50, Solar and wind making %2 of the grid BUT only in sunny and windy places,
The U.S'.s (feel good) recycling is shipped on boats to China to burn,
Kuwait burned 42,000 tires this year.
But we are concerned with US farmers cow farts.. Wake up? LOL. Good luck..LOL.. So funny… All a funny game to help the environment..

  2. Rebwavles are taking too long to be able to solve the climate crisis. We have veen subsudizing them for 40 years and they dont supply much more than 30% of electrical energy. Frahce totally decarbonized electricity in 15 years in the 1980s with 1970s nuclear reactor technology.

  3. There is no climate crisis! There is a psychosis crisis. Humans don't impact the weather. Wake up, if you push a carbon reduction agenda you are playing into the hands of the Malthusian elite.

  4. What should we do when micro plastic from wind turbine blades gets into plankton, fish and the food chains on land and at sea. Everyone knows that fiberglass and gelcoat disintegrate from the sun, wind and external influences. And when half the bird population is cut in half by rotor blades? In any case, it is not sustainable. I have more faith in the wind turbines from "World wide wind" they are made of glulam and steel and much cheaper to produce and not top heavy like the traditional wind mills.

  5. People are failing to stop a virus that kills them directly for 4 full years. It was a million times easier to do than stopping climate change. Good luck.

  6. Why so much focus on large solar farms over rooftop or small local solar solutions? Yes the large plants are cheaper to build, but how much do the transmission lines cost to build and maintain. Plus the loss of energy over distance traveled. There are plenty of large shopping centers, in the US at least, that could easily have rooftop solar installations. And the we can cover the parking lots around them as well. Local generation seems like a much better idea.

  7. Yes, climate change can be countered.

But, the public needs to be aware of three factors to make everything happen in both a timely and sufficient fashion.

One element would be technology based, and another would be related to best practices. The main, and primary factor would be healing the biome, and observing knowledge based routines with nature.

There is a lot to know, but all in all, nothing to be done is extravagant or hard to put into practice. To some, what needs to be done globally in essence, common sense.

  8. how much unregulated fossil fuel does china and other country burn to build all the green engery parts, and many of it is not even quality, this goes to large industrial solar panels to house hold solar everyday use panels… just to satisfy a "green Trend" … just like the the "Organic" trend…

  9. For space solar, transmit the energy to airplanes. Airplanes fly above the clouds make it easier to target them and then airplanes could travel farther. We could even build flying platforms that never need to land.

  10. Mining has increased on a massive scale as a direct result of the push for wind turbines, solar panels, backup batteries and EV's. More materials are being dug up up around the globe than at any time in the history of mankind, particularly coal. We are destroying the environment, abusing human rights through slavery, destroying economies and affecting social systems throughout rural regions across the western world.

There are no benefits from the roll-out of the green industry, only destruction. When they tell you that wind or solar provide energy for thousands of homes they forget to tell you that it's only for limited amounts of time or not at all. We are being lied to. None of this is true. Renewable energy cannot ever be reliable clean or cheap.

  11. The entire supposition is a farce. Humans have little impact on climate. It was warmer 1000 years ago. Greenland was half green; it isn't now. England was producing more and better grapes than france – how is grape growning doing in England these days? If we have an impact it isn't CO2. What is closest to the Percentage of CO2 in earths atmosphere? 20%, 10%, 5% 1% or 0%. The answer is 0%. CO2 all together is 0.04% and Human CO2 is 0.01% Closer to nothing. Use your brain.
