Global renewables: Pioneering the energy transition | DW Documentary

We are facing the greatest upheaval since industrialization. To stop climate change, the energy system must be transformed worldwide. Very little time remains to accomplish this. But there are places where this renewable future has already arrived.

The documentary explores the question of what needs to happen in terms of politics, policies, and society to implement what is technically possible, when it comes to renewable energy. To do this, the film visits two completely different places. One is in the US and the other, in Bavaria. These localities have two things in common: Both have completely converted their energy supply to renewables and as a result, both now have more money in their coffers today than before.

The documentary provides a global overview of the solutions that already exist for a worldwide energy transition. And it asks what challenges still need to be overcome — not only in the laboratories and power plants, but also among the movers and shakers who must drive the change today.

  1. A lot of talk in this documentary about using renewable energy to split water via electrolysis and then combining the subsequent hydrogen with carbon in order to produce … methane (CH4)? Methane is four times as potent of a greenhouse gas than CO2. Why are they so excited about producing more greenhouse gases with renewables? Moreover, the burning of hydrogen fuel produces water vapor, which is also greenhouse gas that, according to NASA, amplifies the warming effect of atmospheric methane. What is the point of generating environmentally damaging synthetic methane fuels with clean and renewable sources like wind and solar when we can use said renewables to charge batteries that can heat our homes and power our civilization? The corporates seem to be missing the forest for the trees in their pursuit of profit at the expense of the environment.

  2. Romans 1:22 Context

19Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: 21Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, 23And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. 24Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: 25Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

  3. Many wealthy individuals maintain their wealth by adopting frugal spending habits similar to those of the less affluent. They also prioritize continuous investment, whereas some poorer individuals tend to spend extravagantly without focusing on long-term investments, often attempting to impress those who are already wealthy.

  4. Digging for oil. Building refineries where people live , learn and grow up. Refinery yet also a City. Cities and Refineries, Mines and Well Fields. Terraforming is far from impossible. The Conference is daunting enough. The nations which choose to participate in these upcoming Terraforming Conferences; are what to you?
Please send in your answers. I will create a spread sheet to formulate Data. This Data I will transform into Intelligence. Oops, sorry.

  5. The G.T.A. only works for those who are actively participating. There will be various levels ( and stages) of participation; until ultimate phase is achieved. However; not everybody is choosing to participate. I feel it in my bones, disdain de to discord. These individuals shall not choose for active participation; perhaps passive attachment. I can say neither yea nor nay.
I am the Premiere. I am the Commissioner. I am not responsible for your efforts.

  6. I'm wondering if the synthetic photosynthesis will pull Hydrogen from Salt water, and if so, what happens to the sodium? Will it be a cheap and easy Desalination method, or will it just work differently producing something else?

  7. Hydrogen can only be burned clean if air is out of the process. You need clean oxygen, otherwise you gonna emit NOX and other greenhouse gases.
    As air's 70% is nitrogen!
New study shows how harmful it can be to burn hydrogen! DYOR!

  8. To call it green energy is actually wrong because somewhere down the line it would not be green anymore. We also learned in science that energy does not disappear, it rather transforms into another form.
What we need is more sources of energy that is safe for humans in the long term

  9. I don't have my notable status immediately available to myself.
    As your Premiere.
No info,no new age contact list (my family has these things) no way to make contact with the system I have created. So I have requirements.
    These could be met.
So? Do people want the G.T.A.?
We could stay with the Space Cadet Artificial Intelligence Program which causes Mass Shootings and Suicide Spikes. Or, remain in scope of the V.R. Program; whatever in the wide world that means. -Your Premiere

  10. Hey Germans, how do we recycle solar panels? Or are you gonna drown in those toxic things? Right now they are being buried in landfills and spewing their poison into the land.

  11. Billionaires are building renewable but not batteries.
I mean grid scale batteries. This will prevent renewable from replacing fossil fuels. We need a rate structure that causes the investment in grid scale batteries.

  12. 20 years ago, the U.S. produced 7% of its energy from renewable energy, it was all hydro. We started this year producing 25% of our energy via renewable energy, still 7% from hydro, 18% from solar and wind and enough solar and wind is in development now, to produce 50% in 7 years and 80% by 2040. Nuclear will produce the rest, supplying 100% clean energy before 2050. The EU is on the same track and China is close behind. The future looks better than the near past.

  13. I've noticed that some people tend to view solutions in absolute terms: either as completely ineffective(0%) or as the best possible choice(100%). But I believe that evaluating options on a scale of 'better' or 'worse' is more effective than labelling them as 'the best' or 'the worst'. The video helped me realise this about my own approach to decision-making.

  14. Generally excellent but some egregious corporate propaganda mixed in, notably around hydrogen. There are huge numbers of studies showing that the amount of energy lost when making, transporting and then using hydrogen is utterly uneconomical, and because of the physical properties of hydrogen, are simply not solvable issues. Fusion is pie in the sky but hydrogen is just a colossal waste of money and time.

  15. as long as we in the developing countries are also allowed to use our fossil fuels to industrialise like the west, get rich off of fossils , we too wil get to renewable energy at a later stage. otherwise big ups to DW for the docci, i hope it aint propaganda and ps note Germany has increased coal import from South Africa…

  16. Exactly once climate cycle is affected..the world may not be able to feed this population. I know its hard to imagine but entire human history is filled with people starving to death.

  17. very impactful documentary, especially for developing countries, here in Kenya we are already adapting to renewable energy and solutions to sustainable development Goals (SDGs) yes clean sustainable energy is the Future, Good work DW Documentary.
