China’s climate story is a contradiction. On one hand, it produces more emissions than any other country, by far. But it’s also investing significantly more in renewable energy than anyone else. How do these two extreme positions come together?

    1. The responsibility for carbon emissions should be assigned to the locations where end products are shipped and consumed. Blaming global factories as the primary culprits for pollution is flawed reasoning. When consumption decreases, pollution from manufacturing countries also decreases. Consider restricting imports, especially those produced using environmentally harmful energy sources, to the EU; however, be prepared for a potential increase in inflation.

    2. What about CHINA' S Anti Sattelite Missle Attack! Which created Millions of Space JUNK! Went against Space Law Test Rules! 😮😮😮

    3. We in UK have set ourselves back and will be paying huge fines over the next 4 decades for Sunaks back peddling! China, America and Poland are leading whilst the UK returns to the dark ages!

    4. Dictatorial China cannot bear the political risk of energy blackouts, but the democratic West can bear the political risks of energy blackouts. Don’t you think this is ironic?

    5. This news headline is unreasonable. China has a large population. If the same number of people consume energy, the US would definitely rank first in pollution emissions in the world.

    6. In china, most of people like hang the clothes outdoor,we think it is a normal things, can save power and fell the smells of sunshine.but when I know this is forbidden in US and some west country.I am puzzled, why ? you said we need reduce carbon.but………

    7. Developing countries like India China Brazil Indonesia should focus on its development and force the dveloped worlds to pay climate change compensation

    8. I saw a documentary last month that said the China's carbon emission will actually peak in year 2024. After that, it will gradually decline quite rapidly meeting the Paris agreement a decade earlier than agreed upon, because they've been building renewable plants heavily for the past decade and this will be their primary source of generating power. The coal will actually be used as a backup in case if it's needed or to support the renewable plants.

    9. Maybe because the rivalry between China and US is causing China to protect its energy security just in case something catastrophic happens, China will probably have one less vulnerability.

    10. Happy to see that German is shutting down many of its industries due to high energy price, which helps it to reach zero CO2 emission sooner than expected. No emission, No pollution, No job, No money.

    11. The biggest polluter is the West so far based on accumulative emission since industrialisation and per capita! DW is shameless to put such subject!

    12. Whatever else. In the end China will not just be the biggest single emitter of greenhouse gases at one time. It will also be the single biggest combined historic emitter. That's actually not that far of. At some point in 2030-2050 the biggest historic share of emissions will be China's. And then that part of the discussion must change. If it were up to me, then this unavoidable fact should already be part of the discussion.

In the world of tomorrow the largest share of global warming from greenhouse gas emissions, and the associated climate change and sea level rise, will be attributable to China. Just because this is not true yet today; Won't make it any less true tomorrow.

    13. 6:11,"The Three Gorge Dam, for example, was an environmental disaster".
Come on DW, how can you shamelessly and assertively say something like that without any proof? Are you a serious media or just blondly anti-China? Racism?

    14. Europe and US have generated their high historic coal emissions during the time when coal was either the cutting edge, or still recent enough technology with no clear-cut science pointing to it being a global scale eco-disaster. Meanwhile China, is generating their current coal emissions by investing into 150 year old dated technology whilst having definitive science knowledge of it leading to local health disaster and global eco-disaster, and … whilst having many cleaner alternatives like gas, nuclear, hydro-power, etc. I can't believe they're being cheered for and getting free-pass on their coal activity for investing into renewables for something like 5% of their total electricity consumption.

    15. Every day when i watch youtube ,China here, China there, China everywhere ,it seems western politicians care about China more than they care about their parents, don't they?

    16. Most of the pollution generated in China (half per capita than the US anyway) is for exports consumed in the US and Western Europe. So it is consumption in the US and, to a lesser degree Western Europe that drives the pollution in China.

    17. China's investment in renewable energy is exemplary. However, there are a couple of key things that need to be addressed, not limited to increasing battery storage capacity, improving energy sharing infrastructure, as well as increasing critical minerals recycling (rather than sourcing them from areas where there are substantial risks of human rights abuses).

    18. China peak emission will be in 2024. 6 year earlier than promised
DW should make a video on western failure on keeping its promise to decarbonise..

    19. Its sick in my opinion to call China the worlds biggest polluter, when they are the main reason to why we have so many cheap materials here in the world. They are the worlds huge massprocing factory and if they had not produced all the goods, then we would have to do it ourselves. Their huge emissions are because they are doing the job other countries does not want to do. We need to work together, not point fingers on the «bad guy» with huge emissions. We all live on this planet together and if the planet is unliveable it will affect all of us.

    20. youtuber has record, 5 years before India bloggers kept rank China cities most polluted, and today, most of them mute, wait, here one India oriented put her finger on China again on behalf of Germany?
