In this video, I demonstrate how to download and set up a Bitcoin hot wallet on your desktop or laptop using Sparrow Wallet. This is excellent software that allows you to connect a node (yours, or someone else’s) to a hot wallet or cold wallet that you control.

Sparrow Wallet is a versatile tool that every Bitcoiner should learn to use on his/her journey to self-sovereignty. I forgot to mention in the video that the software is also free and open source.

Make sure that you are using the correct URL when you download Sparrow Wallet, and also follow Sparrow’s instructions to verify the release. If you need more hand-holding, check out my paid Bitcoin course where I cover GPG and software verification in depth:

Also beware of scammers in the Sparrow Telegram group who will try to get you to call them, click on links, or download malware onto your computer.

    1. WARNING: There are a number of scammers who are using my image and
channel name to try to connect with my viewers on WhatsApp and other
platforms to scam them. Just so you know, I will never refer you to
"my personal trader" or try to connect with you personally to sell you
something. I am trying to ban these scammers as quickly as they pop up. You can
always recognize a scammer by clicking on the image and seeing how
many videos he has. All of these guys have zero videos, while I have
hundreds. I also now have a checkmark next to my name, so that you can distinguish the real Bitcoin University from the imposters. Follow me on Twitter @mattkratter

    2. great tutorial. 8 years into BTC and i unfortunately still find it complicated. try explaining hot vs. cold, nodes, passcode vs. passkeys, xpub… to someone new. try and you ll see.

      love your channel

    3. These type of videos are also very helpful Matthew. There are so many wallets to choose from that it can make the head spin, so it helps me to filter out the possibilities when you mention one because you are someone who I trust.

    4. I know you’ve made a video regarding transaction fees before, but it may be interesting to revisit this topic especially as fees start to rise in today’s environment. Today, block space is already full, and we are barely along the adoption curve. It seems that only extremely wealthy individuals will even be able to afford to transact on the base layer while the greater portion of the billions in the world will be forced to a layer 2 solution, sacrificing their self sovereignty, and decentralization (whether through lightning or fedimint). To scale effectively, btc seems to have to give up this very core feature. To transact on the base layer will be a privilege that few can afford. Essentially, self custody will become VERY expensive at some point. Maybe I’m thinking about this wrong, but I would be interested to hear your thoughts on this.

    5. You are doing an excellent job explaining but most people especially boomers don’t have the patience or capability to create a hot/cold wallet. This is why ETF is important for older investors to put their $100k-$1M in a trusted institution such as Fidelity, Blackrock or Vanguard to protect their investments and not worry about getting hacked, forgetting 12 words, or losing their initial investments and have no place to call or email to get it back. Current Financial Institutions will open the flood gates for average people to invest right away especially in their 401k portfolios. If Bitcoin is for everyone then older generations should be given a fair chance to invest into Bitcoin with their ways.

    6. With all the news about Qatar and Max Kaiser’s rumor about the “god candle” it made me think about Max and Stacy and realize how people have forgotten that they were Russian propagandists for many years on their RT (Russia Today) show. I think Max’s love for BTC is genuine but people are calling him silly titles like “high priest of bitcoin” etc. At the end of the day holders shouldn’t base sentiment on these gurus.

    7. How do we know that any desktop or mobile wallet, doesnt matter Electrum or Sparrow, doesnt allow the creators create double set of private keys for each wallet? Imagine someone made this and will in future drain all "x" branded wallets

    8. This video is 100x better than your last few Saturday videos of you attempting to argue with shitcoiners. I'm really trying to understand sparrow better and this helps immensely. Thanks Matt.

    9. I love that it is a one man project. Craig Raw is awesome for doing this! I had no idea this wallet existed until now.
Thank you for yet another awesome video! I learned something new again.

    10. Electrum wallet works really well with a Coldcard Mk4. It's what I use. Love it! You can adjust fees on mempool transactions, you can delete them if you want. It's great!

    11. For desktop software, make sure you VERIFY it's authentic because scammers will have fake softerware to steal your bitcoin. Thanks why using reputable hardware wallets are important.

    12. Matt, I like a mix of video types. One needs philosophy, theory, and application to succeed. Sometimes the spite which comes through on the videos where you attack this or that is a bit off-putting. Some things need attacking, no doubt, and you are good at it. But too much acid can eat you up. Theory and how-too videos are also important and round things out and are a nice break. I mean this sincerely and with positive intent.

    13. Excellent video. I may need to check this wallet out!

Question: Just as you did a video recommending a Cold Wallet and this one for a Desktop wallet, will you do one for a Bitvoin/Lightning Node please

    14. I bought a new computer / cold wallet and found it way too hard to set up,, its gathering dust in the spare room,, evey streamer was bouncing are too much to follow how to do,, i never had a computer before,,

    15. Sparrow wallet is a thing of beauty. Craig Raw built it for himself but shares it for free and iIt's open source too.
Using Sparrow wallet is a great way to learn how to mange btc the proper way.

    16. I switched to Sparrow a couple of months ago and nothing compares! Excellent video and more important showing the best in class tools to everyone!

    17. Hey Matt, have you heard of QubesOS? It essentially runs an encrypted Linux system that does not connect directly to the internet, and hosts VMs. The VMs can run under different levels of isolation for security.

So I was thinking, I could spin an offline, isolated VM to sign transactions, meaning the private key is not exposed, which is essentially a virtualized hardware wallet (The 'Cold VM'). And then run a separate VM with internet connection that broadcasts the signed transaction to the blockchain, possibly through the TOR network (The 'Hot VM'). The only form of communication between the two VMs are only text strings that pass through the Host QubesOS system. Even if the Hot VM is infected with malware or hacked, the Cold VM is safe and isolated. Any opinions on the security of this? I'm going to try it over the weekend.

    18. Can you do a video on these outrageously high transaction fees?
I have a few outstanding UTXOs I wish to consolidate and some btc that I need to get off a hot wallet but these fees have been prohibitive.
Will they come down at the next pullback? or are Ordinals and the like keeping fees so high?
Am I stuck waiting until the next bear market to make it cost effective?
