US to lead taskforce to protect Red Sea shipping | BBC News

The US has announced a new international taskforce to protect commercial ships in the Red Sea.

Countries joining the security group include the UK, France, Canada, Bahrain, Norway and Spain.

It comes after the energy giant BP suspended its shipping operations through the Red Sea because cargo vessels have been attacked by Iran-backed Houthi rebels from Yemen.

This is the route taken by around 12% of world shipping, which then passes through the Suez Canal. But several major freight companies have now stopped taking the route.

  1. Why does the US get to “lead” a task force in an area that does not belong to the US? They need to stay in their own country and stop terrorising the whole planet.

  2. We East Africans know the true motive of this Huthis and American drama it's true agenda is targeting either Sudan or Eritrea under different pretext, but from Somalia Eritrea to Sudan always have been grave of different Empires, if it wasn't for Ethiopia and Djibouti being the puppet of the West, East African countries could have been well developed countries, we Eritreans have a government that can sail through difficulty so we hope it will pass like those days that have passed

  3. From a historical perspective, the US led multinational task force will be in a "losing battle" with the Houthis in the Red Sea as they were with the Taliban in the Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan.

  4. this is tyranny not protection. protecting red sea from its own people in yemen . also theirs no international law. its US law that they trying to apply on the rest of the world . where is palestine from your fake non exsistence law

  5. The usa and their puppy dogs. How sad to see those supposedly independent countries row in to attack the poorest country in all of the arab world

  6. America protects Israel and blesses the genocide in Gaza. The Houthis said that no Israeli ship will pass through the Red Sea, and this is their right, and they will not touch other ships. When the West, led by America, supports the genocide of Palestinian children and women, no one holds them accountable, but when the Houthis do something to support Gaza, you find the West allying with each other. For evil, of course, the solution is very easy. Stop the genocide in Gaza, and the Houthis will stop targeting Israeli ships. I mean, what do we expect from yesterday’s colonialists? America carried out a war against Germany, as well as Italy, France, and Britain. They all committed horrific crimes, and Israel committed horrific war crimes. It killed children and women and destroyed Gaza almost completely, more than Germany was destroyed in World War II in two years of Allied bombing. Do we expect yesterday’s criminals to stand up for the truth and stop genocide? No, they cannot do that because they have no humanity or conscience.

  7. A “task force” that has NO countries in the region (except little Bahrain) on board. Just western capitalist countries worried about profits, but not people.

  8. Why does America give itself the right to supply and support the Zionist-Israeli occupation with weapons, equipment, and fighters while denouncing Lebanon and Yemen’s standing alongside their brothers in oppressed Gaza? Double standards will turn against America and the West

  9. International security forces for Red Sea shipping of materials but no such protection for the besieged Palestinians. We have truly entered an inhumane world.

  10. It’s a lie the USA can not protect the Red Sea from America it’s impossible task unless it uses nuclear weapons. By sailings aircrafts carriers won’t win war for America because anti ship missiles are everywhere in the Middle East.

  11. don’t think the US can counter the Houthi blockade. This is not an anti piracy operation as the Houthis dont have to board or hijack a ship.
All the Houthis need to do is to take shots from deep in their mountainous regions into the strait. They do t even need to strike a vessel.
If they keep taking shots into the strait no insurance company and no shipping company will accept that risk.
If you wanted to eliminate that risk you’d have to invade Yemen and that would be a disaster that you would not want to even contemplate.
I think the Houthis got Check mate here.

  12. You guys (WESTERNS) please tell me how do you think? What does it mean if you see a country commits genocide against humanity and keep blind eyes? The whole world is watching Israel committing crimes against humanity and wanted nobody to say a word?
Don't play with our minds please.😊
Leave Yemen alone and don't play with them they are hard to beat.

  13. FRIENDS, BROTHERS FROM EUROPE, ASIA AND AMERICA 🇵🇱🇺🇸🇩🇪🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧🇫🇷🇨🇦🇮🇹🇪🇸🇨🇿🇸🇪🇹🇷🇪🇺❗ UKRAINE NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT IN DONBASS NOW, WE FIGHT FOR WHOLE DEMOCRATIC WORLD❗ THANK YOU PEOPLE 🇺🇦🙏

  14. Have people lost the plot here. This is a terrorist attack on shipping. It can’t be tolerated. It has nothing to do with billionaires. It has every to do with international law. And how do people imagine the things we need to import which we don’t have or make at home are going to get to their destination? How stupid can people get?
