Germany: The Gas Pipeline Controversy | European Journal

Chemicals giant Bayer has already invested 50 million euros in a carbon monoxide gas pipeline that will run from Dormagen to Uerdingen. But now a pensioner’s protests are threatening to stall the project.Former safety engineer Erich Hennen has been blocking further development of the pipeline with one lawsuit after another – and he has no shortage of supporters. The pipeline opponents object first and foremost to the risks posed by the toxic and highly flammable gas. Unexploded bombs left over from the Second World War are another potential problem. But Bayer is keen to transport the carbon monoxide from one site to another as efficiently as possible, and argues that the project will also bring jobs to the region and generate tax revenue. Local politicians fear a mass protest might be brewing and are wondering how they can better involve citizens in the planning process at an earlier stage.

Foreign ER from duisburg has picked a fight with a giant against whom he shouldn’t stand a chance enemy is chemical’s giant buyer which laid a pipeline in his immediate vicinity a meter and a half underground to transport poisonous carbon monoxide what if it Springs a leak whether it’s an accident corrosion

Intent destruction bulldozers whatever if gas seeps out around here it would be lethal for the nearest municipality next to the aircraft pipeline runs right a for a total of 70 kilometers to transport the gas on even if anything leaks here there’s a company with a few hundred workers

There’s a well-occupied luxury hotel a train station and a community that’s why this location is the most dangerous one at least according to our consultant buyer meanwhile sees no reason for alarm the company Praises its completely revamped security concept that was introduced especially for the pipeline which even exceeds legal requirements

The pipeline has its own monitoring system that keeps track of what enters the pipeline and leaves it if something should happen anything we can respond within minutes within minutes the system recognizes anything unusual within minutes these shutoff valves can be closed off and within minutes the evacuation of the pipeline

Can begin indoor markets that’s no consolation for residents of this housing complex 40 meters from the pipeline now they can’t sell their real estate as easily for the value of my house that means a loss of between 10 and 20 percent that’s according to the homeowners association

But what scares Eric hennen the most are unexploded World War II bombs several of which were found in the pipeline’s vicinity they weren’t even willing to search the ground for explosives before starting to dig anyone wanting to build a garage or a house has to do that and they wanted to

Dig up 67 kilometers without checking anything his fight against the pipeline has been continuing for five years and he’s won a lot of friends along the way they’ve filed suit four times the last Court ruling in May ordered buyer to improve earthquake security the delay is costing the chemicals giant

Heavily year for year should the pipeline never go into operation it would be a substantial setback for buyer is not being able to put the pipeline into service would be a devastating signal and you have to keep in mind that Germany is not alone in the world every

Country is in competition with every other one in the regional Capital Dusseldorf the government is caught on the horns of a dilemma be corporate interests these kinds of examples show just how huge the challenges are and that’s prompted us to think hard about how we can join together with all parts of

Society in North Rhine West failure to find a new approach to planning activists like Erie hennen will have to be taken more seriously in the future they might be considered a nuisance but if it weren’t for their efforts some faults in the project would never have

Come to light so even if the pipeline won’t be stopped it will at least be a good deal safer foreign

  1. they all use the reasoning of  "temporary jobs" as a reason to destroy everyone's land and lives; however the truth is that when these so called short term jobs are ended – and they are short term-  the they stripped, raped the earth, leaving toxins, chemically tainted land as well as not caring about the  occasional unexploded WWII artifacts waiting to be detonated.  They are using the same argument everywhere, jobs jobs jobs, sure…. Do these people have children?  Why would they do this to them, that's disgusting greedy and sick. are left for all future generations to enjoy!  Hope all that money you blow is worth it Bayer
