On Monday, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported that Iran’s Alborz warship has entered the Red Sea amid heightened tensions along the vital shipping route due to the Israel-Hamas conflict and attacks on vessels by groups allied with Tehran. While Tasnim didn’t provide specific details about the Alborz’s mission, it mentioned that Iranian warships have been deployed in open waters since 2009 to safeguard shipping routes, counter piracy, and carry out various tasks.
    Since November, the Houthis in Yemen, supported by Iran, have been targeting vessels in the Red Sea as a show of solidarity with the Palestinian group Hamas in its conflict with Israel. In response, numerous major shipping companies have opted for the longer and more expensive route around Africa’s Cape of Good Hope, bypassing the Suez Canal, which manages approximately 12% of global trade.

    As per Tasnim, the Alborz warship entered the Red Sea through the Bab al-Mandab Strait; however, the specific timing was not provided. Unconfirmed reports on social media suggested that it arrived late on Saturday.
