In Europe things are changing very very quickly and a lot of people think that electric cars are charged by coal or powered by coal it’s not actually true last year coal began its biggest death spiral ever in fact coal fell by a very big percentage in use in countries such

As the United States Europe Australia and even in China where more renewable energy was installed than ever before hello my friends welcome to the channel I’m Sam Evans you’re watching the electric Viking has been a so-called Monumental shift as European coal use and gas use has collapsed with a huge

Increase in wind and solar generation and that means that these people who claim right that EVS are charged by fossil fuels in particular like coal while they’re becoming more and more wrong every single day Europe’s coal electricity generation fell by 26% gas fell by 15% in 2023 this

Collapse resulted in a 19% reduction in Europe’s power sector emissions however for the first time wind power which grew by 18% surpassed gas which only accounted for 177% of all of Europe’s electricity now places like Germany there is now more than 50% solar use and Germany is imploring countries like

France to do the same France has said though that its plan is uh new nuclear power at the same time the hinley power project nuclear power project in the UK one of the biggest nuclear projects in the world has been delayed by nearly 10 years with a cost blowout of nearly $50

Billion I made a video about that if you want to see that I’ll put the link in the description below wind and solar power are now the most important source of new energy worldwide and part of the reason for this is the declining cost in particular the declining cost of solar

Europe uses a lot of cheap Chinese solar panels as most countries do except for the United States and those solar panel prices came down by nearly 40% in 2023 together solar and wind generate nearly 30% of Europe’s electricity solar covered 9% of Europe’s electricity with hydroelectric power bouncing back

Increasing its share in 2023 Renewables reached a record 44% share of the European unions or Europe’s energy combination use so Renewables have nearly hit 50% in Europe and it’s obviously not going to go back the other way it’s not going to change anytime soon Europe is aiming for 55% by 2030 so

They’re aiming for 55% of all power produced in 2030 to be fully electric now that’s a pretty I don’t think it’s a very aggressive strategy it’s certainly not um optimistic it’s probably pretty pessimistic places like Germany you’re hoping for 90% by 2030 Australia is going for 90% as well but then you’ve

Got other countries like Brazil Brazil who are at 93% Renewables there’s many African countries who are at nearly 100% uh there’s certainly opportunity for a lot more growth than this and I personally think it’s very likely considering the huge price drop in not just solar but what we need to store

Solar energy which is batteries catl the big biggest battery company in the world is saying by the middle of this year the price of their batteries will have fallen by 50% that’s a direct quote from C that will change these numbers drastically companies will have to reassess what their plans are reassess

Whether or not um the coal power plants they’re using actually make Financial sense because in many cases coal power plants are losing money I’ve reported on that on numerous occasions on the channel a report says that in 2023 Europe increasingly relied on wind and solar as 24% of ours in 2023 saw less

Than a quarter of electricity coming from fossil fuels a huge improvement from 4% in 201 22 this is a this is fantastic news I don’t think it’s enough 55% in 2030 I think these these targets are not aggressive enough I think they need to Europe needs to do more but are

They heading in the right direction absolutely nearly 50% already now is you know it’s not too bad can Europe do better yes should it absolutely what are your thoughts thanks for watching bye-bye

    1. Just for the record, from Kentucky that has a very long tradition of coal, coal plants have another ugly little secret. Coal ash.

Those are the pollutants left, after the coal is burned, in the ash: nasty heavy metals, acidic runoff, and retiring a coal ash dump, which can actually be the size of a small mountain, can cost millions upon millions of dollars. The more they burn, the more waste there is, and the more expensive decommissioning and sealing the coal ash waste ponds or piles, depending on the way the plant operated.

"LG&E to seek rate hike to shut down ash ponds

Louisville's Mill Creek coal ash ponds have been the subject of litigation with the Sierra Club.

      James Bruggers

      Louisville Courier Journal

Louisville Gas and Electric plans to shut down its remaining coal ash ponds at two large power plants and ask its customers to carry the $311 million bill."

    2. Electric viking where the hell are you getting your information from Hans Christian Anderson fairytales? Germany is opening up new coal mines while forcing Poland and orher Easten block nations from continuing to mine millions of tonnes of coal i know Germany has opened up at least three massive coal mines in the last two yrs one of them has totally destroyed a complete group of villages for an open cast coal mine. These mines are being used to drive German industry because Russia switched off the Gast tap on the nord stream pipeline. Oh by the way im living on the European continental shelf albeit in the uk so i am a bit more aware than you are on this topic. Living on the west coast of the usa

    3. Solar panel are useless at night, barely work on coludy days,in certain nothern latitudes efficiency is down in winter due to the angle the sun hits the surface of the earth. They are not friendly to the environment( did you see how much land they are on in this video?).I saw a video about it by Dr W.Happer, very interesting.

    4. I'm somewhat sceptical about this… as always a lot of content on this channel seems to be skewed towards EVtopia. I haven't seen 40% reduction in solar costs, so where do these stats come from. Probably some government study which to be honest is flawed from the outset. You forgot to mention that Brazil relies primarily on HEP and so doesn't require batteries.

    5. Let's not forget that the immediate first benefit of electric vehicles is to lessen polluted air around roads and thus humans. So even if fossil fuels are used, a primary objective is met. Air pollution has been largely forgotten about in this discussion but is much more of a health risk than generally known.

    6. At least some coal in Europe replaced by 'biomass', the euphemism used in Europe for chopping down and burning forests, something not done since the middle ages. Not progress to my mind.

    7. Love the channel. What is the source of the stats on the cost decline of Chinese solar panels? I can only find falls of 10% per annum, is it over a longer period?

    8. Germany will not be able to get the percentage that high for solar. Possibly. Wind will help, why has warming not slowed with these efforts, surely there should be some difference?

    9. Not sure where your getting your information from Sam to quote Feb 8 (Reuters) – β€œGerman gas-fired electricity generation jumped to its highest levels in two years in January as power firms dialled up output to compensate for the closure of the country's nuclear reactors and meet higher heating demand during a cold snap last month. The 8.74 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity generated from gas-fired power stations was the highest since January 2022, according to think tank Ember, which was just before Russia's invasion of Ukraine led to the severing of gas pipeline flows to Europe's largest gas consumer and economy.”

    10. Not true for Germany! After the start of the Ukraine war we're using more gas than ever. We even built 5 new floating LNG Terminals.

Anyway, the fluctuations in coal and oil prices are in the usual range of a few percent. No reason to predict a collapse of the coal, gas and oil markets.
Please do some better research! Magical thinking won't make things happen.

    11. The 50% number of renewables is for all types of energy. That means transportation, heating/cooling and cooking.
The 44% of 2023 was only for electric energy

    12. I think it’s so funny when these anti EV people complain about having to mine all the things that go into an EV. I hate to break it to them. Every single part that goes into an ICE car comes from… you guessed it. Everything is mined from the ground or comes from plants or the air.
