Panama Canal suffering major disruption | BBC News

Global shipping is severely disrupted by Houthi attacks on ships heading to the Suez Canal.

Across the Atlantic, the other canal vital to global trade is also suffering from major disruption as fewer ships are now getting through.

The El Niño weather phenomenon contributed to a severe drought, the ACP said.

It is expected to increase the cost of shipping goods around the world.

The Panama Canal greatly reduces the time and distance for ships to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

Now we’ve been reporting for some time now that global Shipping is severely disrupted uh by hooti attacks on ships heading to the Suez Canal but across the Atlantic the other Canal vital to International Trade the Panama Canal is also suffering from major disruption as many fewer ships are now getting through

The culprit this time though is climate change as Michelle flurry reports is this the world’s most expensive Ive traffic jam ships lined up for days outside the Panama Canal last August roughly $270 billion worth of cargo flows through here each year but this vital link between two oceans is running out of

Water which is a huge problem for shipping companies and could spell trouble for global trade the number of vessels that can pass through here each day has been slashed from 36 to 2 before Jose santes from Shipping Company auna told me this shortcut between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans is the

Natural route warning if it’s blocked alternatives are needed meaning more time and extra costs unlike the sewers Canal the Panama Canal works by lifting boats up through a set of locks into an artificial Lake 85 ft above sea level but it means the canal here is reliant

On rainwater which is is in short supply 2023 has been the second driest year in the history of the Panama Canal Ilia Espina de marata the Canal’s Chief sustainability Officer says the drought made worse by the El Nino weather phenomenon is expected to last until May

The big problem we’re having is lack of rain in the rainy season which goes from May until December we’re supposed to get tons of rain and fill the Lakes this year there was very little rain we had ELO year and now that we’re in summer the L Lake started the summer with very

Low level so we had to cut down on number of ships being able to Transit the canal to maintain the lake level through the summer on Gaton Lake the freshwater Reservoir that feeds the locks the Canal’s hydrologist Nelson garer showed us firsthand the scale of the

Problem the level is uh as you see in the rule is 8120 ft the level should be 5 ft more than now to conserve water fewer boats are allowed to pass through the Panama Canal each day this is one of the lucky ones but a changing climate is putting

Billions of dollars of trade at risk and raises difficult questions about the future of this engineering marble the canal Authority is trying to reuse as much water as possible it’s considering building more reservoirs to store water and is even exploring CL cloud seeding to make it rain more we believe it’s

Climate change if you look at the world 2023 the Amazon River very low Mississippi River had to stop transits very low level so it’s not only Panama it’s the world that has seen a lot of different climate situations this 2023 while other routs suffer disruption from politics and piracy the problems at

  1. This is such BS. All they need to do is pump ocean water in there. They're literally surrounded by it. Blaming it on climate change is just a poor excuse for wanting to disrupt the world economy..

  2. Nothing to do with climate change , easy to blame everything on that . More to do with not conserving water and making allowance for the different seasons and that elusive El Niño / La Niña .

  3. And across the other side of the world Australia is having more rain than it can handle. El Nino and his sister La Nina are like that. Your call of " Climate Change" is absolute bullshit. Your a disgrace and corrupt. This is a natural phenomenon that has always been with us you fools. You truly are disgusting and Bullshit like this only hurts the cause. I have reported your video and I hope you are treated like other conspiracy theorists

  4. This is what happen when the US handover control of the canal to Panama. These non-whites can't maintain the canal. Can you imagine there were people protesting against more reservoirs being constructed to mitigate drought. I guess sometimes you need them to be fucked over with no money from the canal.

Forget what drought or el nino, this is your main source of foreign currency, you protect this canal with everything you got, and obviously they don't care.

Forget climate change, you didn't do enough mitigation, you didn't try hard enough and you blame it on Climate Change?

  5. that system is crazy unless they have some sort of turbines down the locks to generate electricity… then that would make kind of sense… ?🤔but that system it just stopped the natural course of the rivers and ecosystems that have been there for as long as 1000 yrs? (probably more?), and for how long time this manmade engineering canal has been made and how long time mother nature took to be against it? 120yrs – uhmm and how many billions cost to maintain it ? Are they selling this fresh water that the canal provides to Panama? 🤔

  6. Climate Change is the affect and the distribution of consumer needs from 'goods and services' such as for example the 'cattle' beef industry in the Amazon forest, is the greatest challenge of 'clear cutting'. The rainforest and the globaliztion of 'shipping routes' in times of crisis as it is has even greater disadvantages of 'climate change' and other key ports as it is in Israel/Egypt ports of entry with shipping containers passing into the markets bound for Europe.

  7. Media loves the "climate change" boogey man. Wait until there are floods and excess water in Lake Gatun. It'll still be chalked up to "climate change". When EVERYTHING is due to "climate change", NOTHING is due to "climate change".

  8. Pumped sea water is the solution. Pump water up from sea level to refill the top lock in the chain of locks. Might need a storage reservoir too. As the locks are emptied to move the ships down (or up) the sea water is released. Then pump an additional amount of sea water to pump into the top lock again. I don't think the volume of pumping would be too much.

  9. The solution is regrowing the tree canopy and to use them water collecting net tarps like Peru uses. No trees, no straws or sponges to draw or contain the waters.

  10. Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

    Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

    Acts 8:37
And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

    Romans 10:9
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

    Corinthians 15:3-4
For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

    Ephesians 2:8-9
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

  11. So is it man made climate change or the totally natural phenomena El Nino that is causing this latest panic.
This issue has been going on for several decades and I would have though that in this day and age having to rely on rain to fill an artificial lake would have been replaced by something more modern.

  12. And next week bbc will report that “climate change” is causing sea levels to rise. Think about the carbon footprint of your Tesla lol you alt left are part of the problem

  13. People knew this was coming with Global Warming. Mexico is building the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuatepec railroad to connect the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. They are upgrading their harbors to allow quick loading/unloading of intermodal railcars or well cars carrying shipping containers two high like in the US. In Canada they are looking at the Northwest Passage.

  14. Stop using nuclear weapons testing in the middle of the seas under water, stop dumping fuel from commercial airplanes over the sea before they come into land. It takes these rules as well and other things i could mention.
