Mexico is in the states I was in actual
Mexico City what I said New Mexico City
yeah and that’s okay brother cuz you’re
a Missouri cat and that’s what you do he
was on me a couple weeks ago because I
said uh what was it Memphis was in I was
like Memphis in like the Northeast part
of
Tennessee yeah he said that that’s the
opposite side but there was a piece of
me too that was also working out my head
I kind of noed I of you did see it cuz
Knoxville’s East right Knoxville Memphis
is West and Memphis is Southwest
Southwest Polar Opposites right and then
Nashville’s in the middle North like the
northern middle we can pull up relative
no no relative Memphis and Knoxville

night I feel like it’s my first day of
school can’t wait to see the boys and
then people are like boo you’re a piece
of [ __ ] and I was like damn bro the boys
are still mad I did apologize cuz I
wanted to do a tweet hey Delane and I we
got a great guest on to day T Lewan but
I was like I don’t want to you know I
don’t want to kick a guy while he’s down
it was interesting because like
obviously there was the [ __ ] show and
when I got to Mexico you knowa it was
like I had like hardly any service
anytime you and I tried to talk I’d have
to call you back four separate times in
four separate locations just to just to
get something done and I get there and
I’m not really thinking of it cuz my
logic was well I’ve taken literally six
months off the Pod for football before
like this is probably nothing like that
I I was it was a it was an innocent
thought process that ended up not well
and and and along those lines as well
like again when you do do those things
we’ve always pivoted we’ve always like
hey we’ll figure it out that was like
the first thing I said to you I was like
yeah bro that’d be sick like we’ll
figure it out yeah don’t worry about the
spring tour we’ll figure it out and then
obviously hindsight’s 2020 and we’re
kind of thinking through it a little bit
more like okay we could have went about
that way more a lot different and though
and like yeah the brand itself could
have gone about it a whole lot different
me personally like when I get to Mexico
and I go to sleep I wake up and I have
like a text come through around 10:00
a.m. or something like that it’s like
it’s from you saying hey you should
probably say something in the internet I
I don’t know cuz I took I took my social
media I was and this is something the
thing that I was doing which it’s so
lame that I can’t talk about it
because I I I’m yeah Nas but also like
I’m like hey I was doing something and
it’s like but I can’t say what it is now
it’s you’re about to make a a mo like a
a box office yeah which is like no it’s
not that it’s not a it’s not a Tarantino
movie or anything like that if it was I
would break that n and make tell all of
you immediately that is the coolest
thing of all time but this opportunity
was something I’ve never done before so
I was like super focused on it I told
Sherman I was like hey man here’s my
password here’s my username Sherman is a
guy who works with us um and I was like
can you just post post bus and stuff and
just make sure that like because I want
really want to focus on this for that
month that I’m gone and when I saw your
text being like hey you probably should
say something that’s another thing that
like I’m an idiot like why wouldn’t I be
the first one to say hey I’m sorry I’m
not at the spring tour I’m sorry that
I’m not at like busing blah blah it’s
like literally like will my dad putting
his son behind his back going listen he
did he’s doing the best he can and I put
that out cuz we hadn’t said anything yet
I know know if I think about my
individual I should have just been
direct because I sent that we were
sending voice messages back and forth
and I was like hey I I kind of talked
about I kind of said something on the
bus or whatever I didn’t say too much
it’d be not or it’d be good if you like
put out a video or something kind of
just said it without being like hey you
you need you need to put video you
should say something before I say
something then when it was night time
and nothing had happened and I know we
were back and forth on FaceTime I was
like I got to put something out because
we’re about to we’re about to cancel
this live show and I’m gonna just it’s
gonna be bad it’s not GNA be good and
then everybody thought we cancel the
live show because I wasn’t there but
before I left the live show was like Hey
we’ve sold only a couple of tickets so
yeah yeah there were a few things CU
South Carolina we had a low number and
then the place told us that hey there’ll
be a lot of people show up they of when
we had the push back not the push back
but kind of like the the the the
disgruntling with the boy spring tour
not busting with the boy spring tour
right and was like I get it you guys
have a backup plan and everything else
but when sales sells this stuff and they
think the brands think it’s you guys and
then all of a sudden Taylor’s not on
half of it then it’s like you know they
might not it’ll rub the sales people the
wrong way because they don’t want to
stick their neck out and sell for you
guys because they don’t know if you guys
are going to both be showing up so that
thought going into we’ve sold a lower
number of tickets was kind of like okay
we can punt this one get one in
Nashville which we know will be on our
own backyard you’ll get to do another
one so instead of doing one live show
now you get to do two out of the three
yeah it was kind of like that whole
combination of like hey load tickets I
don’t know if delany’s coming with us
yet I’m riding this thing solo I’m
trying to figure this thing out you you
know they’re uh uh Dave had good points
about you know all this stuff with the
spring tour and everything else so it’s
like how this to me would be better
because it’s almost like yo if we got 15
20 fans showing up for a live show when
we could go in Nashville like we shoot
ourselves in the foot being in every
corner of America trying to push Live
show tickets right when we’re just
trying to get interviews for the head
coach and players it’s like we can do
one where we know we’ll sell more like
it’ll be bigger it’ll be better yeah
versus like you swing the camera around
like we may we still did a meet and
greet which was a lot of fun I feel like
people were like walking away like oh
that was sick because we got to talk
with you guys and hang out versus just
listen to a show yeah sit in the back
room then do a show then go back to the
back room type thing obviously on the
surface it all looks bad it looks you
know not good I had some people trolling
I had somebody who told me they drove
down from Canada and I was actually like
[ __ ] man I I felt so bad about it but
then I come to realize like this dude’s
just a troll and he’s just been somebody
that’s like been negative in the
comments before yeah because I’m like
feeling bad I’m like God I know this
will in the big picture this is like a
better move on being like Hey we’re
going to do a live show in our own
backyard versus like show up for the
1520 like we’re going to make this work
and give them our all like when we’re
there have twisted te’s like do the
whole song and dance Delaney was awesome
but uh yeah it
was it was yeah it it could have been
handled so much better ESP like you I
think once we realize we [ __ ] up as
far as like telling people in advance
you did a great job of working
everything I really dropped the ball
being with my focus somewhere else could
have done a much better job of like
speaking more on it being there before
saying something like and taking
accountability it it was a really it was
a tough go that first week I remember
being tight and I also did I didn’t look
at social media a whole lot but I was
gone for 30 days and if I every time I
checked social media there was a new
clip from bar stool someone commenting
on it or a new something or a new this
unnamed show where [ __ ] P made a joke
about it well because while you’re gone
it’s like Travis backs out of the Beer
Olympics last week like we’re having all
these things and it just boom boom
Domino after another turbulent couple of
months yeah turbulent couple of months
to the point where like I’m now so I I
jump off social media and then I come
back and Peak I keep I peek behind the
curtain but I don’t see the whole
context to the point I was like yo is
this not have we not
like gotten over this yet like what I
like legit got tied about it for a
second barcel gotten over saying like
when we get more like when I show up to
mini golf and Dave’s like I’m out of
Beer Olympics yeah oh yeah and you
called me on that I’m like all right
dude whatever we got we got a we got a
full court pressure Dave back in Beer
Olympics he’s text he said he’s
quadrupled down that he’s out so and the
thing too is like we were wrong like we
were wrong mostly I was wrong like I
handled it
horribly but when I’m go peek back the
I’m like man I can’t believe this is
like this has still got to be talked
about this much like this we messed up
we’re trying to do better but it’s like
human beings are the only creatures in
the entire world that will beat
themselves up after making a mistake dog
shits in the house you put your dog’s
nose in it dog goes back to being a dog
it’s over depends on how hard you hit
them yeah no question that is true it
depends I don’t know what life you’re
living but not me not me human beings
just constantly beat yourself up beat
yourself up I think like you and I do a
good job when we do mess up dve Busters
being a good example we have a lot of
lot of examples especially in the
football World when we mess up you you
look at it you navigate it you’re like
okay where do we go wrong and then you
try to recorrect and course correct but
then it’s really hard sometimes when
people are like but you did this but you
did this but you did this and that’s how
it felt to me a little bit when I was
like you know 23 days in to being in
Mexico and I pee behind the curtain
again once again not getting context and
it’s like these guys like yo yeah I was
like we were trying our best it’s not
one of those things like if we’re in
like we’re getting coached in ball cuz
we’re obviously getting critiqued
literally every day whether it’s talk to
coach [ __ ] cuss out coach softly
whatever it is it’s not like when you do
make a good play your coach also follows
up with hey but remember when you [ __ ]
this play up don’t do it again yeah
you’re like damn I can’t even enjoy like
making play in the world of the Internet
it’s like people hold on people will
hold on and remind you like if you make
a good play and then another bad one
comes where you make good one be like ah
you know but Taylor he bailed he’s out
and they just reminded and I just every
time I saw like a tayor bailed I was
like there was a piece of me that kind
of hit me I was like damn dude all see
some comments I’m like [ __ ] I know he’s
probably seeing these and it just blows
it just sucks cuz you do like at the
like how many conversations do we have
be like hey I don’t I want to make sure
I’m not letting you down like you’re my
best friend right I want to make sure
you’re cool with this and all these
conversations over and over again and
then you see it and you’re like there
here come the
insecurities right down the barrel and
it’s just kind of like oh [ __ ] dude uh
Jack had a good point did we talk about
on the episode or was it more in like a
a team meeting we’re you bring up the
the point of like you know when we do
pivots like there’s been times where
whether it’s from it’s from the knee or
something’s got to shake up training
wise I got to go train here or when
you’re hey I’m going to do the podcast a
game happens okay let’s not we we’ll go
solo Doo like all the times we kind of
handle it oh you talk about when he was
in football right right either of us
doing anything I think as like a fans
perspective when you were full-time in
the NFL playing people gave you the
benefit of the doubt to when you had six
months to take off that was what you had
to do now that I don’t know what your
play is with Football let’s just say for
hypothetically let’s say hypothetically
goe you’re done that means that this is
now your number one priority so the fans
are not going to give you as much leash
anymore on missing stuff so I think
right now is a great opportunity even
though you might not believe it but to
apologize to our fans for for not being
here for the last month have I not spent
the last hey I think it’s been a little
bit of a back and forth oh okay if
there’s been zero Clarity you’re abely
right I just know that there’s some fans
out talking I just think there’s fans
out there that are like yelling into
their [ __ ] speakers like come on like
just say you’re [ __ ] sorry one time
so and that’s not me no Jack yeah yeah
I’m he was bringing up you were saying
do you want me to can I does you want me
to do it hey hey apologize hey it’s all
good I’m think I’m thinking of uh the
South Park episode where the dude’s like

minutes on here explaining the thought
process of how everything went I want
you guys to know that never have I ever
tried to slight any of you one way or
another and I have never intentionally
tried to hurt any of you people by
taking myself off the bus or hurting
this brand by going to do something
completely different than I’ve ever done
in my entire life and for that I am so
sorry I feel like seeing the backlash
and see everything I’ve really let you
guys down in ways that I didn’t know I
was letting you down and that is a
horrible feeling because sometimes you
just go through life and you don’t
realize some of the people you might be
hurting along the way and if I hurt any
of you by not being on this bus and not
being around the boys I am so sorry I
could have handled it better and in the
future I will handle it better if other
things happen where I do leave for a
couple of weeks I will make sure and
tell you the moment it’s even a
possibility that it happens and be
completely transparent with you I love

first 20 minutes are solidified I feel
good about the first 20 minutes
everything else is storytelling and
trying to work stuff out and it was
interesting to see that like after
hearing him say that and then reflecting
back on the show like the like him just
in literally in front of a a soldout
stadium working through jokes the Ryman
yeah yeah yes Stadium the Ryman a
historical church yeah absolutely I mean
that’s a going out there and you see a
couple levels like you like you’re
saying you reflect back and think of the
times he is kind of working through it
because he does such a great job of
playing with the crowd yeah like great
job you don’t like that one [ __ ] you
guys this was okay but that wasn’t yeah
well if you didn’t like that one then

just all hate speech yeah so but it was

dangling it and I’m just thinking like

championship of the world we’re doing
those me we’re doing those meetings and
I see that he’s one of the only boxes
kind of not checked and he’s kind of one
of the guys that like you know we met
like we want him there like one of the
core guys that we want there and I’m
thinking like [ __ ] he hasn’t responded
to you know barcel reaching out because
they’re kind of handling all the stuff
they’re wanted to do gift gift baskets
and the whole deal it’s going to be
incredible I saw that he hasn’t he
hadn’t responded yet and um Lisa was
like hey could you reach out I was like
yeah I’ll reach out to Shane and I’m
just thinking you know because you don’t
want to bug him you don’t want to bother
him CU he’s doing his thing and we
obviously text back and forth like our
group chats and everything else and so I
just call him and I was like he’s like
what’s up bro and I was like guess where
I’m at right now he’s like where I was
like I’m at a I’m at a gun shop and I’m
going to purchase one and kill myself if
you don’t commit or respond or give us
some type of answer if you can come to
Beer Olympics or not and he was like we
sat there for say he goes do
it no he’s like he’s like why why you
pressing why do you I’m like bro there’s
there’s so much money going into this
thing and everybody everybody we want to
take care of everybody we want to do it
right and our people everybody that’s
working on it behind the scenes they’re
trying to get head counts and know who’s
going to be in or out and uh he was
talking I don’t want to I don’t want to
uh um I don’t want to spoil part I want
to do spoilers right now the last thing
we can do is put out any expectations
yeah or put out expectations just put
the pressure on everybody else cuz that
moment that D backed out I’m throwing

back to the Shane thing I just sit on

him was like it’s on the internet yeah
it’s everywhere he’s like no no no he’s
like I mean is there a place that

goes but uh no it was uh it was sick to
me what you got there some Luc you all
no I’m I’m sure I got a couple I got a
couple espressos in right now I have a
Shane story yeah cuz you went on
Saturday yeah so I I messaged him on
Instagram on Saturday with no intention
of getting tickets and I was just like
good luck uh your shows this weekend um
not even thinking he’s going to see the
message or respond he responds like five
minutes he’s like come through tonight
if you want I had four friends in town I
was like I really appreciate that but I
was like I have a bunch of friends and
like day of show I don’t want to be the
guy asking for five tickets so not a big
deal and he’s like it’s all good bro
he’s like we can like make that work
blah blah blah he’s like it’s five
tickets right and then I had miscounted
one of my friends had also brought a
friend so I was like it’s actually six
but I was like seriously not a big deal
like this is too much and he’s like
what’s your email I’m going to find it
and this is at like 400 p.m. on Saturday
so I was like guys like if y’all want to
go to the show at like 9:30 tonight I
think we can do it so we’re all fired up
and by the time it’s like 8:45 rolls
around I’m like he’s he’s still in his
7:00 show he just never hit me back and
it I had like gotten all the people
hyped at
this I thought you went yes and and now
I’m hearing JP went last night now my
ego’s double oh damn I’m sorry bro and
it hurt I thought you went cuz when like
I I took a minute to respond so Shane
calls he’s like hey I know you guys are
coming and was kind of like giving me a
runaround he’s like your boy Jack’s
coming tonight and then I did a little
like hey make sure you tell him not to
post a lot and he’s like oh that’s what
you guys got him for blah blah blah so
we were joking but I thought you went
that night uhuh because if not I I mean
Mitch I know we didn’t necessarily I’m
thinking in my head spring tour
interviews you have to get them done
it’s a fair statement you got us a door
right there that’s huge I have my family
in town when did they leave they’re
still here oh yeah I I mean reason
too all I’m saying Jack if I would have
known you didn’t go totally would I’m
not like bu but if anything I felt
really bad for my friends in town cuz
you got them hyped up well there was a
moment in time where I was like it’s
shanee Gillis like sold out I saw
tickets going for $1,200 at the Ryman on
Saturday so I was like so I was like the
fact that I’m even like asking for six
tickets it it feels a little scummy and
and I know he doesn’t feel that way it
was nice enough for him to respond at
all but like at some point when he was
like dude what’s your email I was like
guys we’re [ __ ] in like they were
[ __ ] fired up they’re like why is
Shane messaging you and I’m like dude
he’s just a friend to work like
by the end of the night I had to just
[ __ ] lay on my sword and I was I I
wasn’t mad at all I was just like my ego
was so bruised I was like bro no doubt
cuz you got all everybody hype yeah and
they were like like the girls were like
we don’t give a [ __ ] like we don’t know
Shane really and I was like this oh you
were hanging with everything oh it was
like four girls and two guys so I was
like man they probably would not enjoy
themselves this situation in Oregon so
yeah yeah but it’s I’m glad I heard all
the shows went well I had a bunch of
friends who actually bought tickets and
said that did was Theo there on Sunday
Night opening or was that just Saturday
I think it was Saturday I saw stor he
did like a 15 minute opener for the both

blatantly asking me and it’s the same
thing like any of our boys that does
something that where you have to

get uncomfortable about being like hey
these people want to see you do you mind
letting them in and so I kind of put it
off for a minute but shout out Zin dude
he was Shameless about it he just kept
asking and asking and I was like all
right I’ll ask I’ll ask him so I text
Shane he’s like no problem loves the big
boys loves the big boys some big boys so
I I H him up and then it was like the
day of and my service was so bad all day
so I’m like sporadically getting
messages from Zin and Keegan and these
dudes and I think they had like six
dudes with them total yeah and uh they
end up getting to the show all Hogs all
Hogs they end up getting to the show and
they’re like in the show and they’re
like we want to meet him like how do we
go meet him after this and I was like
you should have passes like they should
have gave you guys a pass oh we don’t
have anything like can you text him I’m
like is he on stage right now and
they’re like yeah I was like then he’s
not going to answer a text like what are
you talking about like but just young
cat 20 minutes later dude 20 minutes
later I get a FaceTime from Shane he’s
with all the boys he just hits the pan
he’s got the big boys with me got the
big guy you know he was in heaven loves
the big Bo yeah they apparently they cut
it up that night too so that was a big a
big win for my my boys in Michigan my
national champions bro
so I had uh Levis text and ask like hey
could you connect me with Shane uh maybe
going to one of his shows and I was
either on the move or something but I
felt kind of
like you
know no yeah not not no but it it made
me I I didn’t feel like at that moment I
wasn’t like I didn’t want to again hit
up Shane like hey do you mind if I give
your number you know to Will and stuff
like that I don’t think he would have
cared I think he would have loved that
probably I think so too yeah yeah just
because yeah football guy but for
whatever reason I was on the move so I
was kind of like fleeting in my brain
and I forgot about it and then a couple
days later like will comes back around
he’s like hey all good bro I ended up
getting in touch with I’m like oh [ __ ] I
should have looked out for the boy it’s
uncomfortable position to it really is
cuz I I I’ve done it before and I don’t
want to like it’s like you don’t want to
sit there and and feel at any point

facilities can you rank your top five
spots that we’ve ever been to I can if
we have a list of where we’ve been I can

let me ask somebody else Nebraska does
really here’s here’s why the way Oregon
looks now Oregon I would say is number
two but the way Oregon looks at this
current moment they’ve had those
facilities since like what 2013 20 yeah
they said the new ones that they’re
starting they like the concept plans of
them will be done in like four or five
years so when that
happens it’ll be the mea of any program
like an Iron Man movie literally they
Iron Man facilities like you could just
tell that they were so far ahead like
Tech wise and everything else and with
Nike they got so many cool things yeah
yeah they have so many uh and the the
the look of it oh yeah I think so did

there the look of it is just like it’s
slick bro it’s so clean yeah like a
modern look but like an athletic modern

stuff for absolutely everything they
have a specific sport performance like
science area it’s inside the margus
Mariota performance center God that’s so
cool he’s the king there King bro he’s
the only Heisman Trophy one only Heisman
so they have that Heisman Trophy like
sitting looking gorgeous and having like
all of his all of his background kind of
written around the trophy like below it
and then behind it is they have what
looks like places to sit but it’s the
islands of Hawaii that surround it so
him being the only Trophy winner he is
the man there there like a whole section
of a building that’s just like Demarcus
Mario to Hall it’s just like you look up
in the ceiling when you look at it from
your eyes you don’t see anything and if
you look through it through your camera
it’s like his face what yes how does

show us everything like some places like

how Tennessee I actually haven’t been to

just finished those new ones that we um
they were talking about with like the
whole car wash a lot of these programs
are adapting we put the pads on but I’m
talking about Hospitality Hospitality
yeah Tennesse is up there I mean I feel
like Nebraska Michigan you got to kind
throw this South Carolina you got to
throw them to the side it’s like we’re

their Locker Room’s been there since I
was there I thought that they just redid
that locker room no at Michigan no
didn’t they add in like LSU was the one

Michigan is what I been say not locker
room the we room is the weight room at
Michigan to me is better than organs
also they didn’t I think a lot cuz
remember we I don’t know if we want to

but they like didn’t want us to film in
that like the locker room oh but they
only didn’t want to film because they
were at practice so you know players are
being the boys were being boys or stuff
still check the hospitality box yeah I
would have loved to have done it and
just really preface like hey this the

are what locker rooms look like like the
boys are at practice you got shoes by
lockers like the boys were at practice

we could see the track facility I think

Oregon were just to to bottom from
facilities to just like restaurant
waitresses to the rental car gal just so
out the airp like unbelievably nice like
what do we do to deserve this and it’s
just clean everywhere Oregon yeah cuz
they’re all high yeah free spirit a
little more free spirit I think all
drugs are decriminalized there important
you can yeah I mean there’s some cuz cuz
I would see comments and everything else
to where I’m I’m assuming people are
alluding to that I think in Portland
it’s decriminalized so in like there so

the hard part you fly into Portland you
got a drive two hours ago down to Eugene
so I’m curious like I’m sure they just

into Eugene I’m sure and we had a 4-Hour
layover in Salt Lake City that was the
worst part about organ as we yeah we had
a 4-Hour layover we had to go right back
after the interviews um um so that way
we didn’t get back at like 6:30 at night
on
Friday because we’re done with the
interviews on what like three I think or
was it earlier than that yeah like 3:00
on Thursday right on yeah Thursday we
went to Denver and then flew back Frid
morning tried to make a flight at 6:30
made a flight at 6:30 out of Portland go
to Denver took a little 4H hour nap at
the hotel airport 4 hour we probably
what yeah it was we slept 4 hours cuz we
land we had a little bit of a delay and
we got in at like 11:30 yeah it was like
11:45 at time I was getting in my room
and then we had to get up at 3:45 yeah
something like that and then fly from
Denver to Nashville I mean it’s a trek
but three three awesome conversations
three awesome interviews T Johnson the
best spring T interviews we’ve ever had
dude this this I mean both of them
really Dylan Gabriel starts like asking
me questions and we just have like a 45
minute long conversation like I’m kind
of running through my Stu with him
talking about all the transfer portal
cuz he’s transfer around a lot of
different places and uh then with TZ
Johnson he talks about like he got
adopted by Bo nicks’s family at 15 years
old and his M his biological mother is
still like in his life and everything
else and she was like pushing that issue
to get him out of where he was to
basically be with his family uh B Nick’s
dad he’s the head football coach at
their High School in Alabama like at 6A
school like he talks about B Knicks
basically being like a Manning like very
professional
from being a high schooler like very
straight edged about your business you
know all ball and so TZ like being
implemented into the family he’s he
recalls in that in the episode his first
night where they ate dinner as a family
and he was like we all ate dinner as a
family I didn’t know if I should like
grab a plate and go back to my room or
like you kind of like you know where I’m
at you you you know grab a dinner plate
and then you play video games whatever
it is and he’s like they all sat down we
ate as a family and I was like thinking
to myself I hope I I don’t mess like I
hope I don’t mess this up I hope I don’t
have to leave here damn it it’s crazy to
like say out loud cuz it
almost yeah me and he my nose sted
feeling weird mine too and we go from
that so he talks about getting up to
that point a little bit after he was a
massive organ fan because his stepdad
when he was young showed him an organ
game because he’ he’d let him stay up
late and watch football with him yeah
and so when he watched Oregon he thought
uh uh DeAnthony Thomas was his favorite
player and was a massive Oregon fan and
when Bo Nicks committed to Auburn Auburn
Oregon played the family didn’t let uh
TZ go because he wanted to wear organ
gear because he said he just wore his
Oregon hoodie he said probably every day
probably didn’t wash it in middle school
and everything else loved Oregon so he
goes he had he’s he’s a small receiver
he was like a buck 35 coming out of high
school or something like that and so he
commits to Troy uh the schooling out the
university in Alabama and plays there a
couple years balls out hits the portal
and he’s getting some offers and
everything else and all of a sudden
Oregon calls and he and he’s like when
Oregon calls he’s like I tell I tell him
right there I oh I’m committed you don’t
have to say anything else I’m committed
literally I’m committed to Oregon Bo
Nicks is was the current quarterback so
it’s like full circle because Bo
transferred from a Auburn to organ for
his last year or two or for his last
couple years and then Bo and TZ are
playing together no way and he sets the
single season receptions record as a
receiver last year TZ his first year at
Oregon at his favorite school and comes
to life at the very end of the episode
insanely charismatic great personality
talks about he’s the swaggiest dude in
the in college ball it it’s a it’s a fun
conversation I mean he’s trying to be
the swest dude in start showing us his

I got to show off the the leg tattoos
here like you see the drip I got the

off during the game so that way you can
see the accent of the mouthpiece but

to let uh to get Dylan in he’s like look

only ever had a buzz cat growing up I

got to my length he looked like ET when

three days are going to be the toughest

we’ll be getting back from uh our
Alabama trip and we’re doing the draft
coverage in Chicago so them flying back
early on Friday she takes off Friday
morning so I’ll kind of be you’ll like

need that first night to get some sleep
but other than that like it’ll be we’ll

kids’s going to be down sleeping whether

not going on a business trip for eight

having total and complete fun for eight

and be all drained like they are filling

so you know when they come back they’ll
be ready to maybe take over 70% of the
load for a minute a day or two you the

to get back within 48 hours we take the
earliest flights home just to get back

like a vibrant beautiful bunch of colors

feel warm and fuzzy inside landscapers
like we got you they start planting
stuff and they go three years from now
got to give plants time you’ll have that
perfect it’s now been three
years I have good landscape I got good
grass but say you have good Landscaping

start looking out and tum brought to my

right there’s not a whole lot of vibrant
French Countryside going on here that I
was wanted so bad and this dude named

action I bought a tractor and I dug out
damn near half of my own landscape this

plants I am going to have a world class
Garden three to five years and I took

fin like a year and a half no year

something from Twisted te dirt bike wise
was last year Supercross and that was a
year ago but it’s that that conversation
of that bike started you started that
conversation with them a little before
that I didn’t think we were going to be
able to get a bike from him we got but
then we were going to get a bike and you
promised it for a year it’s been a year
yeah and that’s we have it now we do and
it is beautiful it is so sick and and
just the the like Sean and Dustin and
Chris like DD were super accommodating
accommodating for the guys for my family
Taylor Delaney like got us tickets had a
really good seat um but they’re just
great dudes great people and can’t thank
him enough for getting us a dirt bike
and we Taylor could only be at the the
thing for an hour anniversary but yeah
first day back anniversary and that’s

he’s just getting back and his
anniversary is on 420 and so Taylor had

never ridden a dirt bike I can’t like
he’s like they want you to ride it out

dirt bikes I love dirt bikes and uh but
knowing that Taylor said no I’m like

it well because he’s out there in Mexico

middle of spring tour we’re doing all

it for like 30 years and but they were
my parents kept saying like four or five
times they the coolest thing was seeing
how excited you were because you had
like that little kid like energy like
holy [ __ ] like it’s here we got it you
be got a derp dude I was in your
excitement and nerves to get on and be
like oh [ __ ] I knew I was gonna do that
too oh I knew it and Delan was like you
can’t do it like the whole time Del’s
like in my ear like don’t he can’t [ __ ]
up I’m like dude I’m so nervous and I
was like just like did one of those and
I was like oh my God and all the pro
guys even look that didn’t even you did
that just from my eye it didn’t seem
like anything had happened the pro guys
came up to me were like doing the hey it
happens to us too like don’t worry about
do mean that thing it made me actually
feel worse I was like please stop I
understand I [ __ ] up I know you’re
trying to make me feel good but the
second out or did you did you almost
lose no no no no like I like I let the
clutch out and I I put the throttle down
a little bit and I kind of just puttered
out on me the second one that was kind
of weird cuz I had the clutch in still
and I pressed I put it in the first and
then just turned off and I just I put my
hands was like I’m very nervous right
now everyone please and the guy came
over and like tweaked the clutch for me
I’m like it’s perfect that’s that’s
going to do it it did actually so I was
really happy about it but even then you
hear me driving off and it sounds like
the bike can stall it any second I was
so nervous bogging down yeah before too
they were like this is a race engine
can’t like on this road be very careful
slips very easily so like then I started
getting my head a little bit like man
what if I just tip this thing and I get
how long how long that it been been
since you’ve been on a dirt bikee since
I’ve like driven an actual dirt bike I’m
probably 16 years old is 16 when you
broke your foot or earlier than that no
I was 12 when I broke this foot got you
your boy I no joke I put a little thing
on this on Twitter but like I would get
up in the morning before like middle
school and high school like 6:00 a.m.
and go ride my dirt bike in the state
land for like an hour and then I would
come home and get ready for school and I
would get home and I would get on my
dirt bike and I would drive to the gas
station I I would drive on the roads and
then the police would get behind me and
put the lights on I would just go into
the desert I literally was I like I felt
Invincible with the dirt bike it was
insane that’s cool I would drive to my
friend hous dude I I truly thought I
would go to the Super pumper gas station
on the corner of dynamite and Tatum and
I’d get a microwave burrito and I’d fill
my gas tank up and it’ cost like $150
and I’d bring change I put on the
counter like pump
three like 12 years old got
Tris p on the bus I know yeah that’d be
so sick Vlog with him get him on the bus
I know dude it l literally like that was
when I saw that dir bike when I saw the
bus with the boys on the sides and
everything I was like this is that is
probably the coolest gift I I feel weird
saying that cuz I feel like there’s a
cool gift I’ve been given out there but
still from a Nostalgia standpoint little
kid the little kid in you and everything
else first loves the coolest thing ever
and it was cool that Mitch made it
happen and Mitch eats sleeps and
breathes only thinks about dirt bikes
and we just ball bust him we ball bust
him for this last year it was it TR
truly dude it was the coolest thing ever
like I I was at home be like hey T we
got a dirt bik like we just left it
there too like Delaney Delaney drove it
here because I had to go my I was five
minutes late to win soccer game pulled
up I was a parent that pulled up and was
like all right get out there she’s like
changing in the car on the way over got
her out there playing soccer she kicked
she’s gotten better at soccer by the way
that’s good yeah she’s gotten better

cuz they’re too tight oh the waistband I
can’t get it going I want to show you
these that’s my nugget right there but
look at these little boys right here and
these are the tighter fitting ones let
me see your
nugget yeah cuz you like them tight I do
like them tight you can kind of see the
outline that’s it right
um but look at these things show your
ass show your ass keep going hell
yeah they are extremely flexible you can
you get the wide shot on this thing too
watch this hit a full squat only thing
that hurts is my knee that’s a great
squat yeah and it’s comfortable too they
got stretch they move around the

was juicy bro like thinking number one
both Missouri boys so everybody

yeah the state Miss boys and being a
high school coach at Park South and
driving [ __ ] 13 hours off of a
coach’s Clinic connection yeah there was
uh I mean I wanted coach CU those those
things are chaotic yeah they didn’t
really know me it was one of those like
I I’d gotten a phone call I’d sent
letters everywhere I’d gotten a phone
call and I just told my wife I like this
is the first time anybody’s even called
me back and then it kind of came and
went I said I got to go drive there I
got to go you know take a chance yeah
but like my brother he’s a high school
coach and he kind of came out to one of
the coaching conventions I they hold him
at na there’s one in Nashville at the
oery or whatever and they’re just like
it’s just like a zoo I mean the who who
they’re there they’re out there they’re
having a good time or whatever just you
know you go to Nashville and then a lot
of guys I’m assuming like yourself at
that time you’re sending emails letters
and everything you’re just literally
trying to get hand shake a hand have a
conversation I want to I want to pour
coffee like whatever just to get in the
building you where did that where did
that come from for you is it that
linebacker mentality you know that and
um just never want to live with regret
and and early on realizing okay like I
have a greater passion for this you know
parent teacher conferences those are
cool and all and but I want to coach
ball I want to be somewhere where it’s
about ball more often than not and uh
even that’s changed in college football
you know but uh to the the aspiration
just to get to the highest level and and
not sit here and say man maybe I could
have if I would have sacrificed
something so has it always been that way
have you always wanted to be a head
coach uh I don’t know Chas the dream Co
yeah I always wanted to see you know
where and um you know what what the end
all goal could be you know what what you
could achieve and some of that reset you
know I I’ve told people this before but
when my wife got sick you know it kind
of made you say okay like step back who
really cares about this other stuff it’s
about your family it’s about taking care
of your three boys um and I probably I
was probably really selfish early on in
my career right like how can I move up
the ladder you know there’s only one o
line coach or one linebacker coach in
each town so if you’re going to continue
to advance you got to you got to leave
town you got to go somewhere else and
and and you’re and you’re literally 12
hours a day I sometimes more than that
way more than that yeah yeah way more I
mean you sleep in the office especially
you know early on in your career there
probably hasn’t been a place that I’ve
worked where I haven’t slept in the
office at some point you know wherever
I’m at and uh that’s some sometimes
that’s required sometimes you know I’ve
learned how to be a little bit more
efficient there and balance it but um
you have to be willing to do more when
you’re at the bottom of the totem pole
right to advance and if uh for any ga’s
young coaches out there listening like
what what are those gritty things that
you would be more willing to do than the
next guy because cuz there’s so many of
G there’s so many of those guys just
trying to get their foot in the door you
obviously you know you’re driving 13
hours just for an interview at pit just
to the I think I believe I heard right
the coaches were at Penn State that day
so it didn’t even happen that day you’re
changing into a suit at the gas station
and you’re talking about you’re alluding
to things like not everybody’s willing
to pour a cup of coffee make sure the
guy ahead of you his call sheet looks
the way he wants it because if he gets
promoted I could be a guy that you know
I was joking with JP I know how to run
the computer I know how to run the
technology uh what what are what are
some bits of advice you would give to
those young coaches yeah I just I think
every coach has aspirations of being the
offensive coordinator the defensive
coordinator the head coach and the
reality is you got to go find all the
jobs that nobody wants to do and become
the best at them right like like making
a call sheet and um you know making
yourself to where when this guy leaves
he’s like hey how do I open up this file
you know how do I create this how can I
make this cut up when the film shuts
down yeah find all that I mean I
remember going to Men’s Warehouse to
pick up a coach’s socks you know and
certainly wasn’t what I wanted to do at
the time right but if that you know got
gave me favor with that coach for an
opportunity to you know be his guy that
he trusted then you got do whatever it
is is uh the head coaching gig
everything you thought it be you know I
love uh a lot of pieces of it I love the
fact that you get to interact with more
position groups um than just one side of
the ball um there’s certainly a lot of
headaches but every job has headaches I
mean it’s it’s a ton of fun and it’s a
lot of fun in this place um it’s just
you know fun being a place where you
have great support and where you have
players that are really good if the
let’s just hypothetically say the
cameras are turned off what’s one thing
you
yeah what’s one thing you [ __ ] about
with the job oh let’s just say complain
yeah I’ll be honest I don’t I don’t
[ __ ] a lot because I realize how lucky
and and fortunate I am I mean I think
the landscape of college football is
changing drastically and everybody
everybody speaks to that do you love
every piece of that no but you better be
willing to adapt I think the more time
you spend complaining um you know the
less you are focusing on getting better
and I don’t take a lot of those problems
home one of the benefits for me is my
wife never really asked me about work
which I don’t want her to right I spend
all my time talking about work at work
so when I get home it’s that chance to
uh you know kind of kind of check out
after you get done making your
recruiting calls and stuff right well
you were uh talking earlier about how
your perspective shifted like when your
wife had gotten sick and everything else
how do you I guess work on that work
life balance when you know CU especially
in the you know really any industry if
you’re somebody who’s ambitious to do
anything great you got to be a little
cynical you got to be a little obsessive
you got to like like you said like
you’re you’re selfish because you’re
trying to go after your thing talk about
how you worked on that work life balance
as your perspective shifted well one
thing I’ll say is that there isn’t
balance you know there is no balance in
this profession there’s no balance in
your profession if you want to be great
right so there’s going to be sacrificed
we talk to the same thing with our
players like if you want to be great at
something you got to be willing to
sacrifice something that’s valuable
right and one of those things we
sacrifice is time with our family so
that that’s not going to come back for
me to be the best coach I can be here at
Oregon I’m going to be eliminating some
of that time that I spend with my crew
and what it means is when I do have that
time it’s got to be important it’s got
to be intentional um you got to figure
out way way to incorporate what you got
to do with work uh with what you got to
do at home so like last night the entire
team’s over at my house right hanging
out with my wife and kids so I get to be
with my family but they get to be there
too the extended family
um when when your wife was sick was
there ever a moment to where you thought
okay maybe I need to shift maybe this
isn’t what I I need to go after maybe I
need to uh do something else like talk
about those moments where there I would
assume that there were some lows and
even some hard conversations would
assume yeah there were there were
certainly some lows you know I don’t
think I ever wavered in what I wanted to
be able to do uh I just probably became
a man of Faith a lot more and got on my
knees a little bit more um you know
speaking to a greater power I say hey I
can’t do this alone I need this lady
here with me and uh I always knew that I
was going to continue coach I don’t
think that ever that ever shifted but
you got to solve problems you know you
have to get a a sitter you have to get
somebody that can kind of help out with
the kids and um you know it more than
anything it probably shifts your
aspirations and your focus yeah I’m uh
again fascinated listening to uh to
brenman’s interview with you but we got
to sit with Coach norell a couple weeks
ago and something that really stood out
talking to him is when he’s sitting
there he’s just preaching gospel about
you know his how he worked and very
similar to your style of of coming
through it all but one thing that stood
out was like never working for the job
that you currently have always working
for the next job that was something
walking away from was like oh that’s
like you know that’s something juicy you
love to hear um you seem very much Cut
From the Same Cloth what are some things
that you learned from coach norell
getting to work under him yeah I mean
Mike has uh a crazy passion for the game
when it comes to like it his intensity
you you want to see that start at the
top right you want a head coach that you
know he’s not going to ask you to do
anything that he’s not willing to do he
put in the work he put in the time um he
looked at things outside the box right
and that’s that’s what I hope people see
here is one you see the details cuz all
the details matter uh especially at this
level um but but a guy that’s willing to
put in and everything that they have to
for us to be successful and willing to
adapt and change I think that’s where a
lot of coaches mess up I know you’ve
said that there are too many moments too
many like you know breakthrough moments
but is there one job shift that you made
and one decision that you made that
really kind of put you in the right spot
to where you knew some things might come
together sooner rather than later
because of a choice that you made I
don’t know it’s something I can
appreciate now more than I did probably
at the moment um I was a a full-time
coach at Sam Houston State as a DB coach
I was finally making a little bit of
money we had three kids um and kind of
living under our means and I got an
opportunity to be a graduate assistant
at Alabama and if you go back and look
at that staff now as an All-Star staff
you crazy staff you know coach Sabin uh
coach smart uh you know Lane keif and
Mario christall Mel Tucker Billy Napier
um I mean the list kind of just goes on
and on of the guys that are on that
staff and I I learned more in football
that year in 2015 than I’d ever learned
in my career what was that interview
like going out to going out to interview
with uh with Alabama know uh nothing
that I’d ever been prepared for you know
I I kind of assumed I’d be a fly on the
wall and this is a ga job it’s not like
it’s the most important role in the
building um but to sit there with Coach
sa he’s asking you questions about your
philosophy on pump protection that’s not
something I had dialed up ready you know
I I had my thoughts and I shared them
but um you got to meet with everybody in
the organization you know from uh
position coaches to administrative staff
you know I thought they did a really
good job of being meticulous in that
process getting feedback from everybody
in the building what’ you think of this
guy um so it’s a lot of fun I still got
the voicemail saved on my phone today of
Coach sain calling and you know saying
hey give me a call back it was him
offering me the job oh that’s [ __ ]
awesome not not deleting that yeah did
you did you walk away from that
interview being like damn I wasn’t
prepared like no I felt good about the
interview but the process took a while
right there was some other guys they
interviewed and I didn’t know that I was
going to get the job but you know the
big difference there is you go take that
job I’m I’m making decent money not
great money you go take that job you’re
making 1,200 bucks a month you have
three kids and you’re don’t have
insurance again all of a sudden you’re
on EBT I mean it doesn’t make sense
right like you’re just cutting up tape
for all the cut ups for all the
personnels and formations yeah you’re
doing a little bit of everything doing a
little bit of everything so it’s uh you
know you take a step backwards
financially to take a step forwards from
a professional standpoint yeah you got
any good uh King stories I got some good
I’ve seen some you got one that you can
tell H I don’t know that I got I’ll say
this I’ve seen Lane and he can take a an
ass chein you know for with the and i’
I’ve seen that happen before um you know
multiple times you know something he was
he he became privy to there at Alabama
um but he was able to dust it off pretty
well you know it never really affected
him yeah that’s awesome well I think we
had a body armor question do we just got
to say body armor do I need to do like a
little read yeah but we should wait
afterwards okay doie okay cuz I do want
to ask I want to ask
your your biggest uh ass chewing story
that you took personally that just had
you beaten down from a certain coach or
any coach from a any let’s do both let’s
both well I mean did you ever have one
did you ever have one sa uh yeah and
it’s the craziest deal because you know
the best position to be at an Alabama
with Coach saan is to really be in the
Outfield right you got the infield
that’s all the full-time coaches but to
be in the Outfield you’re kind of safe
like you’re the guys that laugh at all
the head coaches jokes and you see other
guys get their ass ripped but you’re
kind of kind the outside it’s not your
position it’s not so I was in the
Outfield I was a ga um but I remember we
ran a kids camp and uh we must have been
working with like seven eight years old
kids right but he ran Kids Camp like
we’re running Alabama like fa training
camp and uh this is I I get there kind
of late and I’m kind of just learning
the process I’m a little bit of a fly on
the wall and one of our strength coaches
is running bag drills and he leaves
right so he leaves the bag drills he’s
got to go work out our guys so I just
started doing bag drills like I did at
Park Hill South or like I did at Sam
Houston State and I was not doing bag
drills right coach Sav came over and it
happened to be a day that Paul fine bomb
was falling around and he let into me he
let me know what bag drills were
supposed to look like um you know and it
it was a great example of how everything
mattered to him it didn’t matter we were
coaching 8-year-olds it mattered that
you were doing the drill right so I
stayed up that night and watched every
drill to make sure I had a master just
in case I got thrown in the fire now how
about any coach the biggest man I’ve had
a lot of them right I had a lot of them
Curry Smart’s you know a grade a
professional at giving those um you know
Todd Graham is the best um G but usually
once you once you take a few you’re kind
of like and then you see the new guy get
it you’re like hey this it’s part of the
gig what was one that really put you
like say early as a coach um you know
Todd Graham probably prepared me for a
lot of future ASU right so early as a
coach I was uh running the scout team
you know as was a ga at this time you
only had one GA on offense one GA on
defense I was kind of coaching all 11 on
offense um after practice one day coach
Graham goes man I’m sorry I you know I
apologize we have the worst scout team
in the nation and it’s not your fault
it’s my fault cuz I hired the guy he
runs the Scout he points to me right
after he runs the scout team and he is
the worst and I was I couldn’t have been
smaller in that moment I’d just been
coaching high school ball the year
before and uh let’s say just say this
the scout team got better but it was a
good humbling moment for me oh [ __ ] man
I’m just trying to just trying to
imagine in in that moment are you
thinking you’re probably thinking maybe
of a couple players like if you guys
would have just [ __ ] look at the card
oh no in that moment you’re thinking
about should I stay at a high school
coach I should I go back to Missouri
right now and go coach high school ball
so uh no it humbling experience right
but you can’t cry and spill milk man got
to keep rolling talk about uh your
process of of being the the head coach
of the University of Oregon and how that
panned out for you yeah it’s been great
and it it really goes back to the guys
that I got to work with before I got to
see some great coaches do this you know
whe and every one of them was different
Kirby’s different than Nick you know
Nick’s different than Mike Mike’s
different than Casey Keeler and Todd so
the you know I’m I’m relatively young in
this position but I got to see a lot of
really great coaches do it in this seat
and I think the biggest thing I learned
is I got to be me right but there is a
process that you believe in uh and I’ve
probably stolen something kind of from
guy um the other piece is figuring out
what the weakness is on your team and
saying okay how are we attacking that
rather than just rolling with the script
or the practice face that existed 365
days ago because it is changing so um
I’m continuing to grow I’m not there yet
right I got a lot of growth uh to make
but that’s the same thing I challenge
our players with and if you want to grow
you got to get uncomfortable when you
were in the interview process with
becoming the head coach of Oregon was it
a time where uh and I apologize for
being unfamiliar with all the interview
process and everything else but was it
uh was it one of those situations where
you’re hitting the interview circuit and
thinking like okay maybe I’ll be a year
involved and kind of hit this and kind
of have it for the resume and then maybe
the next year or you got in the room and
they’re like hey we can’t let this man
leave like a story a story that I’m
thinking of is McVey when he went to the
Rams right when he was the OC at
Washington you know he was going in the
interview circuit and I remember having
uh sitting down having lunch with him
and he was like you know this is usually
where you know you’ll go around you’ll
get in the interview circuit because
I’ve always been fascinated with being
getting in coaching as well and he was
like you know I’ll do this for a year
kind of get in the conversations and
everything else and usually it becomes
after that I remember when he went to
the Rams coach Phillips was like yeah I
don’t think they’re letting him leave
the building without a contract talk
about the interview process and that
experience being uh a DC yeah college is
a little bit different um you know but
there were some there were some
opportunities to interview for head
coaching jobs before so it wasn’t my my
first interview but they they kind of
come to you you don’t know when it’s
going to come I mean on this one I’m I’m
actually flying on a trip to Miami to do
official visits so I’m I’m recruiting
for Georgia and at the time really
really satisfied with my you know
situation at Georgia we just lost the
SEC Championship I’m kind of focused on
the rose uh excuse me the Orange Bowl um
but I’m going down here to recruit a kid
and I get a call saying hey these guys
want to hop on a zoom so I do a zoom you
know in an airport uh FBO throwing kind
of a a suit coat and uh that was just
kind of the start of it and it really
escalated really fast after that night
after that initial Zoom with some more
phone calls and um goes quick you know
you never know when it’s going to come
there were times where I thought I’d get
for a head coaching job and I didn’t and
then this one is probably one that I
didn’t think was NE I didn’t have a
connection to Oregon I’d never been to
Oregon until I got off the plane here as
the head coach so I knew what it was uh
somewhere I wanted to be but I wasn’t as
familiar you know with it or had any
ties to it so going through that process
every one of them’s different and this
one uh it just it you could tell that
there was a really unique vision and you
know it was all in sync it all align
with what you want as a head coach did
uh was it with with Oregon was it one of
those things when you’re interviewing to
be a head man to where you’re kind of
wanting to be a little choosier or pick
the right situation like had you know
anybody whether it’s Norville Sabin any
of these guys before you coach smart
kind of giving you any advice on Hey
whenever you do get an opportunity to
make sure it’s the right one well I knew
I could be picky because I knew I had a
really good job right I really enjoyed
being the decator at Georgia got to
coach some really good players you know
we were competing for championships
there um got to win a National
Championship that last year so I knew I
had a good job and I wasn’t going to
leave for a bad job you know I always
think the job you take has to align with
your goals like where are you going to
grow it’s not about how much you’re
going to make cares about that like I
got to win right I knew I could win here
right that was really important um I I
had to know that there was support so
yeah there definitely had to be some
things in theine but Oregon checked
every one of those boxes and then you
know you have a couple successful years
the Alabama Job opens up
how how real could that opportunity have
been had you sought that out because
obviously you know I saw your video when
you ever you were saying very juicy by
the way that was a phenomenal job by you
guys
four who has goals and aspirations raise
your hand
up all right everybody got goals and
aspirations you know how you get those
you be the best where you’re at and
that’s how you reach goals and
aspirations that’s how great things
happen it’s not about worrying about the
next thing it’s about worrying what’s
right in front of you 6 in right in
front of your face I want to remind you
guys what that means you guys just got
here don’t know them right but it means
something to be an organ d Everybody
Makes what they they all make
commitments to things that they’re going
to do a lot of starters the world
doesn’t have a lot of what finishers
we’re finishing I want to be here in
Eugene for as long as Eugene will have
me this place has everything that I
could possibly ever want there’s a
little bit of a problem in society today
with people looking for what’s next and
where where there’s an opportunity and
the reality is you know the grass is not
always greener in fact the grass is damn
green and

Eugene um but obviously you want to stay
here and have your roots and everything
here and be here for a long time but how
real was that potential to be the
Alabama’s head coach or be in the mix
for the conversation yeah I don’t know I
mean I think there’s there’s been a lot
of opportunities that were real but if
you we’re never going to let it get real
here I’m exactly where I want to be
right um I’ve said it a lot but you know
I’ve got right now I have an 11y old a
12-y old and a 14-y old I’m committed to
those guys finishing school here right
and for me to do that we got to win
right so uh are there I’m not interested
in the other opportunity one of the
reasons we released the video is I’m
talking to a recruit’s mom the night
before and uh she’s saying I’m seeing
all over you know the internet that
you’re leaving 100% no I’m not I targets
were on you like he’s going to be the
priority right I need I need this DET
tackle and so we actually were talking
on the phone I was like what would make
you feel comfortable I’m telling you I’m
not going anywhere what would make you
feel comfortable are you going to make
an announcement I said how about I make
a video so we make we make a video and I
send it to her first before I ever
before we ever released this and cuz she
had just gone through the same
experience with another coach telling
her she wasn’t he wasn’t going to leave
and apparently a lot of coaches say one
thing and then do another so I I I just
wanted to make sure that we got this kid
and uh you know we’re building something
here and you know I think a lot of
people leave before they ever get to see
what what they could accomplish and
what’s finished you’ve uh you’ve talked
about alluding to the book good to great
and you know what is it walking walking
20 miles yeah 20 mile March the 20- mile
March what are some things you take out
of that book outside of the 20m March
and and also are you making are these
guys reading this are these guys reading
the book too you kind of going over it
yeah they don’t they don’t necessarily
read the whole book uh you know I’ve had
one player after I get up here and and
talk through a book that asked me
afterwards hey what was that book and
they come grab Christian Gonzalez first
round pick for the Patriots he’s like
that was really good can can I read that
book so I wasn’t a big book reader but
I’m looking for ways to grow right now
we’re really studying uh the book Art of
War Miss sunu and then hidden potential
by Adam Grant you know I think those are
both some great books that you know
allude to growth right so we’re always
trying to look for something and it’s
different every year but probably the
biggest thing out of good to Great was
what I can do different not so much
about what the team can do different but
if you want to have a you know great
organization you got to have level five
leadership and what’s that look like you
got to be humble you got to be willing
to grow you can’t be the guy that’s
always pointing out what everybody else
is doing wrong you got to be a thumb
pointer and uh you you pick up on a lot
of pieces like that um is there anything
with the head coaching job that was a
surprise for okay I anticipated a little
bit differently being a coordinator
being a position coach that you learn
about becoming the head coach like any
any
you know harder situ harder situations
with players are instilling all of this
philosophy and getting it amongst the
entire group yeah I mean one understand
that you don’t want a coaching staff
that has a bunch of use right you want a
coaching staff that’s diverse that can
relate to players in different ways and
you know what you define as a good head
or as a good position coach isn’t always
the exact mirror of you you want some
other pieces to that I think the other
thing that you find out really quick as
a head coach is your time’s not your
time anymore you might think you can get
up here early and watch some film but
soon as you walk in somebody’s not going
your door you you start to learn to
appreciate people that can solve
problems right like if they can figure
it out and you can tell them later hey
you did it wrong but this is what we’re
going to do and then you can’t be afraid
of conf Confrontation right that’s
that’s part of the role you got to be
willing to tell people when it doesn’t
look the way you want it to look and
you’re not you’re not here to make
France right you’re you’re here to run
an organization and do it the right way
but you can do that uh with respect and
the way that you do it yeah cuz that
right it’s so much easier said than done
especially with the confrontational
people avoid confrontation and it’s
necessary to grow right if you never
identify what what’s not going right
you’re never going to get it right yeah
um oh man I had a question that you were

his show this morning he’s like will he
just can’t help it his brain is filled
with rocks he’ll continue you trouble
before Kelsey’s not going to this yeah
bro keep up yeah yeah yeah so we had we
had this beer we have this annual Beer
Olympics that we do and with the NFL
schedules we got one similar with my
buddies oh yeah yeah I can’t wait to ask
about that I know you I know you’re kind
of you’re the you’re the head man in the
group chat I’ll get to that uh but yeah
we have this beer lmics that we set up
and we tailored around the schedules of
the NFL guys and we always do it the
last week of June because when uh when
mini camp is done guys have like six
weeks to kind of do their thing well the
first week after mini camp is over is
tight U and George he’s our boy so we
kind of we go to tight and you we do
tight and you get some interview there
so we do it the week after we do it the
last week in June because in July
everybody’s going to be they’re going to
be in it they’re going to be in the
trenches they’re going to be trying to
get better they’re going to be ready to
go for training camp so we set it up the
very last week we’ve done it for three
years in a row and all of a sudden bar
still has something the same week Dave
and them they’re making it about that we
changed up all the barcel scheduling to
tailored around the football guys and
then we exclusively tailored it around
the Kelsey Brothers we I sat uh we sat
with Jason at the Super Bowl and they
were like man we don’t know if we could
make this work Travis is really adamant
about doing it we’re we’re going to like
we want to try to make this work if you
could do it Monday Tuesday instead of
Wednesday Thursday same last week then
we’ll be able to do it so we tailored it
around Kelsey Brothers Travis gives a
call the other day and it was not good
news he was like Hey I’m
so must be going with yeah it must be
something with Taylor yeah yeah yeah
something you know when you’re a
superstar and then you’re dating like
the most popular person in the world
schedules you got to kind of line him up
so I understood but it made for a bad
everything kind of fell out for your boy
this week yeah I’m out here just taking
bullets happens man so you guys have you
guys have an annual little we got a trip
we go every year we have a you know one
of my buddies is a linebacker coach for
the Giants he’s getting married this
year in Miami so we’re taking a little a
little trip to Miami right before the
wedding right it’s it I hope it doesn’t
end up like you know hangover I hope we
all make it to the wedding on time uh
but it should be a fun trip are you the
glue that holds the group chat together
I’m not the glue I mean I’m are you I’m
a piece of the puzzle I’m a piece of
puzzle there’s this committee that
exists that’s kind of this but nobody
really knows about you got you got a
committee within the group this is this
is deep yeah this is big so guys play
different roles in the group chat nobody
really knows who the committee is so
may yeah nobody really knows who the
committee is it just but they make a lot
of decisions and and things get done
what’s been the best trip that you guys
have been on oh man we’ve done Tahoe
Tahoe was a lot of fun um we we’ve gone
deep sea fishing a couple times uh you
know there’s been there’s been some good
trips and it’s gotten better as my job’s
gotten better the trips have gotten a
little bit better too so yeah I bet
everybody’s getting a little bit better
budget hey let’s do it up a little bit
more this time not a lot like where you
guys are you’re back in the ga days
where you’re all cramming in a hotel no
we got we we normally can find a good
spot to stay in dude it’ be like uh we’
go to you got an invite if you’re
interested just we’ll talk that’d be
great we’re going to say no cameras
that’s fine I yeah I’ll do trust me but
the these guys would get excited if they
knew that you could come you know for
this trip all right when do are we able
to say give dates I’ll give dates okay
okay we’ll talk we’ll talk we’ll talk
off camer offline I’ll mess with that I
appreciate that what um now I kind of
now I kind of remember instilling all
your stuff with the guys right like
again going back and I’m using McVey as
as another example because again I I
would just always pick his brain about
coaching and everything else and he was
like comp you know he came to me before
practice uh before training C Camp
practice one day and he was like comp
the the biggest thing that you’ll have
that you have that you’ll have a problem
with that all coaches do especially if
you’re a ball guy like you play you do
all the stuff preparation won’t be an
issue all these these things won’t be an
issue what’ll be an issue is trying to
teach people to think the same way that
you’re thinking has that has there been
a learning curve with that and coming
across guys and be like bro you have so
much [ __ ] Talent right if you just
listen if you just trust the process is
was that a learning curve for you
getting into the coaching coaching guys
the way you were at William juel being a
linebacker being just hungry about the
game yeah I think you know the piece I
always say is if I could go back and do
it all over again I would have got a
psychology degree because it’s really
about figuring out how do you get that
guy to believe in what you’re trying to
teach them or trying to grow him it
could be the same with a coach um the
other piece is just having an onboarding
process when somebody shows up like
nobody knows how you want it done unless
you explain it to them and that takes
time right you got you got to sit there
and try to create and make coaches talk
through why they’re making this call in
this situation right and what your
philosophy is and we talk about playing
the game before we play the game as much
as possible we do a coaches meeting
where we put on a TV copy I’m like all
right what are we calling here what’s
the situation what are we thinking about
with timeouts and try to play the game
out with our offensive coordinate our
defensive coord you know B knck would
sit in that meeting with us last year
but you try to get everybody on the same
page and you know that’s probably where
most valuable the most valuable time for
you is how quickly can you get everybody
in your organization believing the same
way seeing it the same way you see it or
or challenging yourself to see it
differently yeah um and we spent a lot
of time on that Bo Nicks I at the
Heisman Ceremony you talked about him
babysitting your kids yeah was that a PR
move or is he actually a good real talk
that story is real I literally came home
one day and Bo’s there I mean uh bo and
his wife Izzy and really uh Casey Rogers
um and his wife Maya they they they
would come over to our place quite a bit
and uh every once in a while Sophia
would put them in charge of watching the
boys and she’d have a girls night out so
uh unbelievable kid unbelievable family
I’m really excited to see what he does
next are there players that you watch
have success whether in the NFL or that
you look back on that you have a a an
entertaining recruiting story
about okay good question trying to think
entertaining recruit I mean we’ve all
been in the situ where you go do a home
visit and you eat one meal and you’re
full and then you got to go to the next
home visit and you do another meal I
mean uh they can wear you out cuz you’re
going to eat it when you walk in the
door if Mom you got to eat it you got to
eat it and you got to pretend you love
it um even if you don’t um but but
interesting recruiting stories I mean
somebody that that you guys never
probably would have heard of but he’s
actually playing right now in the league
his name’s JJ Russell you know I
remember going when I’m at Memphis I’m
going to recruit JJ and I swing by the
bank first cuz his mom works at the bank
I a note in the bank teller and it
shoots up the teller pole comes to his
mom go play pool with his dad right um
you know at the local pool spot and
we’re playing pool and then go over to
the school hang out with JJ at the
school for a little bit after school we
get on the game we’re playing Madden
against each other last game we play for
a commitment right get his get his
commitment playing for a Comm for a
commitment it’s once I’ve built some
confidence that okay I can handle this
guy play for commitment and that that
night finished off with Coach Norville
pulling up this big Memphis bus outside
of his house and we did the home visit
meeting right there in front of his
house so it was a uh yeah it was that’s
kind of a fun story where I felt like
there’s no way anybody did more than we
did right right right did you prep and
now were you preparing ahead of time
like okay I’m going to have to play this
kid in the game and I I got to well no I
didn’t know that and I wouldn’t have I
wouldn’t have said hey this one’s for a
commitment unless I felt good about
where we were at cuz I I haven’t played
a lot of games since then during Co I
got the sticks out a little bit you know
cuz I tell my wife hey I’m going to work
I go downstairs and play What’s it of
Duty yeah I suck at that there playing
war zone with the boys honey shut up I’m
playing Call of Duty it’s I’m doing my
job you take the headset off yeah she
figured that out pretty quick so uh yeah
I haven’t played I haven’t been on the
game for a long time but you try to
you’re always trying to find something
that’s going to separate you from every
other coach they’re talking to about hey
this is what a three technique looks
like I mean there’s a little bit more to
that in the relationship how how was it
like getting to learn the whole
recruiting aspect of college ball like
you I would assume you being a lower guy
at first and then you kind of get an
area you might go into some dicey
situations some dicey areas like okay I
got to kind of I got to get crafty here
do you have any of those oh I’ve been
you know I’ve been in Baltimore where I
was like okay I got to change I’m
wearing these cool organ shoes it didn’t
used to be something that was part of my
game but I I pulled up the place where
I’m like all right I got to put on my
other set of shoes here I’ve been into a
spot where I got to get patted down to
go in you know that didn’t really
necessarily make me nervous getting
patted down to go in but what made me
nervous is about the amount of people
that were standing outside that weren’t
going in you know I’m like hey will you
you might walking me to my car like I
try to be uncomfortable here but yeah
you you find yourself in a lot of
unsavory situations sometimes when
you’re chasing the right guys dude I bet
um this question came from came from
JP looking back if you
were what coach would you want to play
for outside of yourself now that you’ve
experienced all the coaching trees that
you have who is a coach that you want to
play for let’s say both position and and
even coordinator obviously head coach
you’d probably you know you’re probably
going to say all of them there’s
benefits to all no no I mean I I think I
could um you know speak to each one of
because they’re all different um but but
ultimately like position coaches we got
some great coaches on our staff here
like TSH Leo is one of the best Co I was
actually a ga at Alabama when Tosh was a
position coach at Alabama before he
became the d-coordinator and you know
the amount of time and effort he puts in
the details he puts in I think really
separate him as a coach um you know
Kirby and and Mike are two guys that
really stood out to me as head coaches
um you know and Kirby I’ll probably be
drawn to a little bit more because he’s
on the defensive side of the ball but
the passion and energy that he coaches
with you know the intelligence how much
I felt like I learned in my time working
for Coach smart um you know was
certainly really appealing and you just
always knew you were gonna get his best
every single day as a backer what de
Coordinator would you want to what you
want to play for that’s a great question
um you know Mel Tucker you know and uh
know uh you know Mel was a guy that you
always felt like was in your corner um
you know he did things you know the
right way he always had the players back
he’s that coach that had the players
back um he’s a good teacher um good
communicator and uh was always looking
out for you outside of the field too
Yeah well yeah and then there’s one
more okay we said we got that went all
right this is our our Twisted question
oh but it won’t be too twisted if you
had a movie made about you what

he’s a method actor I’ve seen him get

out for the role right Daniel D is
another guy I think about like that just
like goes all in on his roles um but I
probably say like Ben afflac is somebody
that probably look a little bit closer
to I don’t know I mean he does a good
job too who do you guys have anybody in
mind for some reason I feel I think he
could he could get a Leo oh man you Leo
get some Scruff going kind of cut their
hair like his Leo’s a different a big
pull that’s a big pull yeah that’d be
awesome oh Coach man we appreciate it
this has been awesome I’ve I’ve enjoyed
I knew I would enjoy this conversation
again being a Missour board being a
linebacker being just a young coach in
the game um I think it speaks to a lot
of like the cloth you were cut from and
knowing the journey that you’ve been on
because it is like the longest road
travel being a high school coach and
going to coaches clinics and trying to
shake hands and I would almost I don’t
even who knows how many emails you wrote
and letters you sent that was just a
fart in the wind and never got to
anybody but to see you climb the ranks
and be in the Spots You’re now it’s
really cool it’s really cool I’m
certainly lucky I’ve I’ve got I’ve got
some great luck um and maybe created
some of it but been around great people
best thing I’ve had I’ve been around
winning organizations and that’s that’s
the that’s the the key to to moving
forward so really appreciate it it’s
been fun man for boys for the boys oh I
got matter of fact I got one
more how long did it take you to the
speech before Colorado the Cinderella
story is over man right they’re fighting
for clicks we’re fighting for wins
there’s a difference right there’s a
difference right this game ain’t going
to be played in Hollywood it’s going to
be played on the grass right it’s going
to be played on the grass it really not

certain way I I write down my thoughts
before every single one but I really do
it kind of the hour leading up to that
that meaning um and really it’s built
off of a lot of the things we’ve already
talked you know throughout the week so
we have messaging every single week um
trying to say what’s going to be the
difference in the team that we’re gonna
play you know and that one happened to
um you know be public consumption but it
didn’t play out the way I thought it
would necessarily play out when it came
to that you know so every week we have a
message right that we try to you know
piece together for the team that we’re
playing what’s going to be the theme
what are going to be the differences in
us and the opponent what’s going to lead
to wins and losses and those same things
you heard in that speech were things
that we had talked about kind of
throughout the week what makes us
different in this team how are we going
to handle you know pregame Antics how
are we going to handle some of the
things that are going to show up so um
you know it’s a fun part of the job but
that that has very little to do with
what the success of the game looks like
yeah but well executed what you you got
clicks wi oh that’s that’s a bar right
