Cryptocurrency ATM scam has lost Coloradans thousands

    >> WE’RE BACK NEW HERE AT
    5.30, A CRYPTOCURRENCY ATM
    SCAM MORNING. DENVER POLICE
SAY THEY’RE SEEING A RISE IN
THESE KINDS OF SCAMS. IN FACT,
    DPD SAYS A LOCAL WOMAN
    RECENTLY LOST 14,000 BUCKS TO
ONE OF THEM. SO HERE’S HOW IT
    WORKS. SCAMMERS WILL CALL A
VICTIM AND TELL THEM YOU HAVE
    AN OUTSTANDING WARRANT AND YOU
MUST PAY A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF
    CLEAR THAT WARRANTS. NOW,
    HERE’S THE TWIST. INSTEAD OF
ASKING FOR A GIFT CARD OR WIRE
    TRANSFER SOMETHING FROM, YOU
    KNOW, APPLE PAY OR SOMETHING.
    THE SCAMMERS ARE ASKING FOR
    PAYMENT THROUGH CRYPTOCURRENCY
    ATM’S. THE MACHINES TYPICALLY
    FOUND IN GROCERY STORES OR
    LIQUOR STORES OR SMOKE SHOPS.
    POLICE ARE REMINDING PEOPLE
    LAW ENFORCEMENT WILL NEVER ASK
    FOR PAYMENT THROUGH GIFT

Instead of asking for a wire transfer or for the victim to purchase and deliver gift cards or pre-paid debit cards — both methods Colorado law enforcement has seen scammers use to pry money out of victim’s wallets — these scammers ask for payment through a cryptocurrency ATM.
