Was that by 2040, wait no by 2045 or will it be 2050. To be safe let’s say 2055…the goal post just keep moving.

When I was eight years old, in 2011, I was led to believe that coal was practically dead. It saddens me that thirteen years down the road, we’re still debating coal’s phaseout date.

china just opened several coal powerplants several months ago. Any status on them? (No bots pls)

I’m Canadian, so I looked up how much we have left here. In case anyone is interested…
      * Canada generated 7% of its electricity with coal in 2021.
      * There are 4 provinces that still have some coal generation of of 2023: Alberta, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick.
      * Alberta is *almost* done with coal. We have on unit of one generator left on coal. The other unit was converted to natural gas earlier this year, the other one will be done within a few months.
      * Saskatchewan generated ~39% of its power from coal. Renewables are growing there, but not sure what plans are for replacement.
      * Nova Scotia generated 52% of its power with coal in 2023. Not sure what plans are in place for change, aside from purchasing additional hydro power from Quebec.
      * New Brunswick generated 10% of its power from coal. They, along with Nova Scotia, signed an agreement to eliminate generation from coal by 2030.

    5. I am happy to hear it. Coal is the most destructive way of producing energy. However I believe all G7 countries have already been aggressively phasing out coal plants so this agreement is more symbolic than actually affecting decision-making.

Several countries are still opening up more coal plants every year, more that the total plants G7 countries have remaining. Those countries (China and India) are not at this table. A more impactful agreement the G7 should do is impose tariffs and trade restrictions with countries that continue to add coal plants.

    6. I honestly LOVE the: “wHaT AbOuT ChInA” argument.

Because it usually comes from people who might not realize that the West literally offloads their carbon emissions to China through (essentially) slave labour.

    7. Most people don’t realize that the the coal can be clean.

      It is just more expensive.

Thinks like supercritical steam generator (or ultra supercritical steam generator) are very expensive and efficient. CO2? Carbon capture. PM? Capture those partials and you can make cement with them. NOx? SOx? They can be processed. It is just all about money/cost.

As China announces a roll out of 88 new coal fired plants over the next decade

Face it, they are not interested in a clean environment…just mobey.

It’s okay India and China will worsen their CO2 emissions by 5000% within 5 minutes therefore making your entire country’s effort completely worthless.
