Mega battery built at demolished coal power plant in California will save billions

a few years ago a Coal Power Plant was shut down in Nevada in response to the shutdown this is what was written on Google the power plant was shut down under the false pretense that global warming is actually caused by man’s efforts follow the money people who’s getting rich from convincing people that there is global warming and man did it now this comment was subsequently liked by a lot of people and La Allen believes or Allan La he believes that um this power plant was shut down because of the false pretense of global warming well actually coal power plants it turns out have prematurely caused the deaths of millions of Americans so if you’ve been breathing in the dust from one of these power plants your life expectancy on average is said to be 20 years shorter yeah whether or not you believe in global warming doesn’t really matter when it comes to life and death does it however what happened after they shut down this power plant was quite interesting because it shows what is really going on hello my friends welcome to the channel I’m Sam Evans you’re watching the electric Viking great to see you and it’s fantastic to see how many big batteries have been installed in the United States over the past 12 months they’re saying that the the number of batteries being that be that will be installed in the US this year well they’re saying it’s going to double as in everything that already exists will double so 100% increase in a single year and this shows you that actually uh we’re winning the for the fight against fossil fuels now the Reed Gardener Generating Station um as it was affectionately known was a 557 megawatt Coal Fired land sitting on 480 Acres located near mapa Nevada it was co-owned by NV Energy and the California Department of Water Resources however it was inefficient and costly the plan consisted of four different Power stations the first three were 100 megawatt units and were placed into service in 1965 1968 in 1976 the fourth unit was placed into service in 1983 and It produced 257 GS three units of the Reed Garden were shut down in 2014 the fourth went in March 2017 and the entire plant was demolished in 2019 now it was actually very controversial the reason was because of its location close by to the Moapa band of PTI Indians reservation and one of their communities it was very close to this community and there’s no question um that the community were right to be saying this is polluting our air because it was the plant had long been a concern of on the health effects of the very nearby residents and as a result of several agreements to improve the air quality around the plant the upgraded plant was actually well it’s it was improved but it was still basically killing people we now know from evidence that’s been revealed this year that millions of people died prematurely in the United States over the past 20 years as a direct result of the particle coming from these coal power plants well that’s the past and as much as it sucks it’s terrible it is kind of nice to see that the future is moving on now in that same location well much of it has been turned into Farmland but a small section of it is being used for massive battery storage California is moving away from fossil fuels very quickly and it’s predominantly now being run by solar energy and battery storage there is now basically a huge battery plant where this coal plant used to be Nevada utility EnV Energy’s latest energy storage system or latest Mega Battery sits on the former coal plant Swiss us battery energy storage specialist energy Vault built the 220 Mega 440 Mega hour grid grid tide re Garden of battery energy storage system on the same location as the coal plant it is 50 Mi Northeast of Las Vegas the new battery is on the site of the former 557 mwatt Reed Gardener power plant and the great thing about this new battery is it is playing a huge role in uh helping us not waste energy essentially what’s happening what was happening is a lot of solar power is being completely wasted because for example last week in California there were a few days where solar was creating 160% of the Grid’s needs meaning that extra 60% in the past was being completely wasted now it’s being stored in these huge battery packs so rather than wasting this extra solar that California is generating during the middle of the day it’s being saved into the battery and then it’s being used between 7 and 900 p.m. in those peak hours when demand is really really high between 700 and 900 p.m. now the number one largest source of energy in California is energy coming from these batteries which is awesome because really in the past that wasn’t the case at all all this solar power was being wasted but now you can basically even charge your R between these hours I don’t recommend it because it’s more expensive but you can do so with the knowledge there’s a pretty good chance that power charging your R will be coming from solar generated during the day now here’s what the CEO of the project said it’s quite interesting the hours that NV Energy really get concerned about are from 5: to 9:00 p.m. when people come home from work and the Sun is going down what happens at that point is the solar energy has started to ramp off as the sun’s going down and so we have often had to go out to the market the energy market and buy energy to meet the needs between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. and that energy is probably going to be fossil fuel generated energy over the last couple of years on average we’ve paid $250 per unit of energy during those hours those peak hours we look at a project like this and this can deliver energy for closer to $100 an hour a unit of energy that’s a huge reduction in cost going from $250 to $100 the inflation reduction act actually covered 40% of the Project’s $250 million cost which this it really shows you that the entire inflation inflation reduction act I mean some of it is going to be ineffective in inefficient because that’s what happens but in general most of the projects are like this they’re enabling governments to save huge amounts of money if they are willing to invest in Renewables really exciting to see this because this isn’t happening not just in California it’s happening all across different states in America it’s happening across Europe it’s happening in a big way as well here in Australia where coal power plants are being shut down early because Renewables are creating so much power that we can now store and then use when we need it in the evenings thanks for watching

    1. Sam, do you think that Elon is having mental health issues? It can happen to the best of us… Many people throughout history have been struck by madness once power got to them: Nero, Caligola, Ivan the Terrible, Peter the Great, Vlad the Impaler, Mussolini, Hitler, Mao, Stalin, and Pol Pot…
Elon calls environmentalists "communists" for wanting a cleaner planet while they are buying Tesla products.
I think his behaviour is illogical…

    2. A large part of a power plant is the systems to convert and transform the power into the right voltage, current and cycles. The biggest part of the cost. So old coal power plant's footprint are being used for replacing with alternate power sources and saving and using the power transfer system.

    3. Fossil fuels God greatest gift to mankind… I challenge any one of you to live for 10 days with zero fossil fuels… 10 days… You wouldn’t have the buttons on your shirt you wouldn’t have the shirt you wouldn’t have any food on your table you wouldn’t have your shoes you wouldn’t have your computer screen, your smart phone, your shampoo, the bottle your shampoo came in absolutely nothing… Just 10 days… Zero fossil fuels for 10 days… Not one of you could do it… oh, and for you morons blocking traffic to end oil… Each one of our vehicles is loaded with two cans of pepper spray…😂😂😂

    4. Limitless green energy surrounds us as we head towards free marginal energy costs. No longer will we be limited to expensive poison for profit fossil fuels.

    5. Another great report Sam now you need to make sure that the Daily Mail features it in their paper to counteract the miss information they've been putting out.

    6. Admittedly, a bit off-topic:
If you decompression a 'fule based' steam generation plant, convert it to a geothurmal steam generation plant.
Provided the cost in-situ' is not prohibitive; geothurmal is doable almost anywhere on earth and would not increase the footprint of the original plant.

    7. 04:51 – it won't be long when so much energy will get converted that doesn't even make sense to store it for a long loger time…because storing it for a longer time won't be needed and it would be financially wasteful.

And don't forget that batteries from disposed BEVs will add to the storage capacity.

    8. Absolutely fantastic Sam! Thanks for sharing this great news and keeping us up to speed. Because I can tell you one thing we’re not getting it through the mainstream news here in America. That for sure.

    9. Scientific American recently produced a story that said California does not produce excess solar energy as top state politicians have been claiming. There are brief moments on sunny days when solar panels produce more than is consumed, but that is an outlier that does not produce any meaningful advantage in 2024

I pay 1/3 the California electricity rate in Texas that California does because Texas depends upon abundant natural gas for base load power generation.

40 years ago California had worse air quality than the other 49 U.S. states combined. The unique geography of CA traps smog by its mountains that run from Mexico to Canada . CA has a reason to use solar panels – I don't dispute that. Let States Rights (10th Amendment) determine how each state manages energy. Here in Texas the topography that enables wind generators to works so well also keeps smog a non issue for most of this huge state. Blow wind blow!

Texas is probably destined to become the economic powerhouse of the U.S. California will remain the playground of the wealthy.

Coal is a type of solar "battery" from rapidly buried ancient trees. The carbon is produced by photosynthesis and other organic processes to produce cellulose. Brown coal is from grasses and marshes, but the coal with the highest energy content is from trees. In many cases even the leaves are preserved(How quickly do tree leaves normally rot?) Eventually all of the world's recoverable coal will be consumed. To produce coal, trees must be buried catastrophically or oxygen and bacteria would have caused the dead trees to quickly decay. The earth has a violent history, whatever traumatic events caused millions of acres of trees to be rapidly buried can not be prevented by mankind. Those kind of natural events can befall the earth and its global inhabitants in the future. Happened before – can happen again.

Coal power plants can be improved, but utilities don't want the high cost in 2024. High grade anti-corrosive steel alloys can produce cleaner coal power, but very costly to construct, yet nearly 100 percent recyclable too. Give the solar a chance, but eventually the nations will consume 100 percent of the recoverable coal because freezing isn't the American way (or German). Thousands of acres of frozen solar panels glistening in the ice must be a pretty site. Has Sam ever experienced winter, or did climate change drive him to a warm climate?

Coal saved the forests of Europe before the Industrial Revolution. When the Romans first encountered Scotland and northern Europe it was a thick forest. Today most of Scotland is denuded and the the soil eroded, but it wasn't always that way. Wood became increasingly expensive, some began burning a black rock that was exposed in some hillsides, but when they dug it out, water filled the shallow. An English man named Newcomen invented a crude steam pump – he didn't understand the theory of how it worked. After about 50 years the steam engine was seen as more than just a mining pump – that's what sparked the Industrial Revolution. Thats how coal saved the forests of Europe and really, how an island nation dominated the entire world

China isn't interested in "clean energy" fir the mere environment – China consumes more coal than the U.S. and Europe combined. The CPP is saying if the U.S. Navy blockades the South China Sea, that China will outlast the U S. in a war of attrition over Taiwan. The U.S. won't be able to service its "renewable" energy sector without China. Don't get rid of coal and natural or you'll regret it. Australia could be begging China in the future.- Australian politicians are the dumbest in the world. Japan in the 1930s hated Australian influence in Asia, China much more so. Beware or be stupid

Its odd how people who complain about climate change keep moving to warm coastal areas. Its too warm ? Well, what about moving to one of the M states – Montana, Minnesota, Michigan or Maine? Or an upside-down M – Wyoming or Wisconsin, or even West Virginia?

If you're interested you can compare the raw climate data since the 1880s with the adjusted climate data. Because the transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869 the U.S. compiled pretty good weather data as the railroads needed it, just like the airlines do today. Agencies like NOAA adjust historical temperatures down so that they can show a warming trend. The warm years of the Dust Bowl 1930s have been down graded, and many other warm cycles erased. They have their reasons, but might as well adjust professional baseball scores to fit "reality" as they see it. It's the world we live in.

California still buys coal generated power from Utah.

    10. I live in Ontario, Canada. Since the provincial government (Liberals, as it happened) shut down the last coal powered plant in the early 2000s, I no longer get a brown dome over my city, Ottawa. I remember, as a pilot, flying my plane through the 8500ft altitude. . . seeing the brown below and the white above. . . Back around 1998. ..

    11. the intro is a bit confusing. you are showing the wikipedia page of the read gardener power plant while quoting some random google search result that contains nonsense (…”under the false pretense…”).

    12. The irony is that batteries have become economic because cheap solar has forced coal out of the market and reduced competition in the evening window.

    13. I love when creators like this delete comments because they can't handle reality. That they don't understand. Imagine punching someone and you can't explain why. That's this guy… he doesn't understand science and electricity and Harmonics

    14. Thanks Sam. Always like a positive review from a positive person 😉 I debunked a bunch of folk on FB only to have a moderator remove my posts to support the nutjobs. I don't think they liked the fact I have a $30 electricity bill and drive an EV 😉 So, I deleted my FB account and went to X. Community notes a much better idea..

    15. So if the US doubles its battery storage, it can power its grid a FEW MINUTES longer than the FEW MINUTES it could previously.
California refuses to admit that it gets much of its night time electricity from fossil fuel plants in Arizona. This battery pack will put a SMALL dent in that.

    16. There’s a lot of stuff wrong with this video. California solar is hitting 160% of customer demand right now is because solar output is high and it is not that hot, so AC demand is still low. And when California has excess solar, that energy is not wasted. It is sent to the grid and sold outside of California. And this 220 MW battery farm is not revolutionary or a game changer. California already has 10,300 MW of battery capacity. Yes, it helps add to the existing capacity, but it is not a game changer. This out-of-state storage site is only a small increment added to what has already been installed in-state.

    17. That “$250 per unit of energy” is referring to 1 MWH of energy. That is $0.25 per kWh. On a wholesale market, $0.25 per kWh is highway robbery. In most US states, the cost is about $80 per MWH or $0.08 per kWh.

    18. Coal power plants are closing mostly because the electricity they produce is already too expensive and can't compete with other sources

    19. Should have kept the coal fired plant operational because thorium nuclear energy is starting to come online. Thorium will make solar and wind obsolete. As a result, these batteries will be a waste of money.
