Climate Change Impacts on Mining | Webinar | 12.10.2020

Watch this webinar organised by adelphi to learn more about climate change impacts on mining and the way forward. The webinar presents key results of the study ‘Impacts of climate change on mining, related environmental risks and raw material supply’, which was commissioned by the German Federal Environment Agency (UBA) and conducted by adelphi in partnership with the Sustainable Minerals Institute of the University of Queensland and ifeu Heidelberg. In addition, experts from WWF, ICMM and the University of Brighton provide their perspective on the research results and the links between climate change and mining.

The final report, the case studies and a recommendation paper are accessible via the following link:

Climate change is increasingly affecting the mining sector. Growing water scarcity and a rising number of extreme weather events such as floods, wildfires and storms are exacerbating already existing risks and affecting supply chains. At the same time, our responses to climate change in particular the green transition of our energy systems are increasingly driving demand for resources.

After an introduction by Jan Kosmol (Policy Officer, German Environment Agency, UBA), Pia van Ackern and Lukas Rüttinger (adelphi) provide insights into the study’s findings.

Tobias Kind-Rieper (WWF), Verónica Martinez (ICMM) and Dr. Tim Laing (University of Brighton) provide their perspective on the research results and the links between climate change and mining. Associate Professor Glen Corder (Principal Research Fellow, Sustainable Minerals Institute, The University of Queensland) concludes the event.

The webinar is moderated by Dr. Beatrice Mosello (Senior Advisor, adelphi).
