Hi All, I missed filing my 2023 return and ended up submitting my 2024 one first, I ended up getting a past due balance notice from the IRS which I paid off, and then after all of that I went back and submitted the 2023 return. Freetax usa says that my balance owed is $700, but wouldnt the IRS have sent me a bill in the last 2 years whether I filed or not? I am wondering if i already paid this with the past due notice I received THIS year or if the IRS waits to bill you until after you file. Either way I am thinking I can just send them a check for this money and then they can refund it to me if its an overpayment after all?

Submitted Prior Years Return, do I owe money?

You need to check your transcript online or the notice to confirm which tax liability you paid. If it was in fact the 2023 then you would add that as an other payment to your return

      These things happen.

      > I ended up getting a past due balance notice from the IRS which I paid off

      Excellent.

      > and then after all of that I went back and submitted the 2023 return.

      Okay

      > Freetax usa says that my balance owed is $700

      Bummer.

      > but wouldnt the IRS have sent me a bill in the last 2 years whether I filed or not?

Nope, not typically. IRS only knows h9w much you owe when you file a complete and correct return

      > I am wondering if i already paid this with the past due notice I received THIS year or if the IRS waits to bill you until after you file.

      Nope.

      Pay online today:

That won’t be the case. Assuming your 2023 return is processed as filed, you’ll get a CP14 notice with the Failure to File and Failure to Pay penalties and interest back to April 15th, 2024.
