I suppose someone got ahold of my info andtried frauding my taxes which I don’t know why because I never made any money worth doing that but I also don’t know anything about this stuff. I got a letter in the mail last year saying I owe 11k in returns. I called the number, they opened investigation into it, it’s been over a year and I just got a job doing security and I’ll need to do my taxes again. I heard of something called “amending” your taxes or pretty much redoing them instead of an investigation?
Someone frauded my taxes. Got stuck with a 11k return bill.

I have no clue what your situation is, but you can keep anyone else from filing a tax return with your name on it if you get an IPPIN. It’s an identity protection pin number IRS gives you and you have to include the pin on any return you file. They issue a new one every year that is mailed to your address.
It is in the IRS hands. I can do nothing about that. I was just trying to give you a way to keep it from happening again.
You might think of clarifying your description. You did not say you filed a 2024 tax return. If you did file, how did you file?
Also, ASAP, get a IRS IP PIN. That will keep somebody from filing as you.
Do not postpone filing your 2026 taxes in 2026. Tax years are surprisingly independent.
You can do nothing but wait, (and call) and it’s going to take ages and it’s not going to be pleasant.
Dealing with a client in the same situation, but it’s been 2 years now.
Fraud takes a long time to fix and when you don’t fund the IRS you have like 1 guy trying to handle 100 cases and you get stuck in the back of the line. All he ends up having time to do is delay and you get stuck with computer generated responses which are going to send you letters and eventually try to levy your accounts.
You can (once you get notices) call and ask them to “put a hold on your account” which only lasts like 90 days. To stop collecting during the investigation.
The IRS will be generating interest on that amount on the off chance you are lying. If they find no fraud you will owe the tax and the interest but that probably won’t happen. if there is a hold they won’t send you to collections which will be a nightmare if happens.
I was once a victim of tax fraud.
Question: have you ever filed a tax return before?
in my case, the IRS caught the fradulent return, and sent me a letter early in the tax filing season asking if it was real or not. I followed the instructions on the letter and after an hour-and-a-half phone call, the fraudulent return was expunged, and I mostly got to go on my merry way. The exceptions that make it “mostly” were:
1. I wasn’t able to file electronically that year
2. I made it my life’s mission to do all I could to make sure the fraudster went to prison– which wasn’t much.
If you know for sure that somebody filed fradulently using your personal information, file a report with your local police. The police won’t do anything, but the report is filed under penalty of perjury, which holds a lot of legal weight.
