I have been researching and everyone has been singing praises of freetaxusa. From what I understand I can directly e file through IRS for 2024 but 2023 and 2022 I cannot. I would have to use something like freetaxusa or Priortax for the earlier years. Has anyone had any issues with this? Like can the IRS be angry with me for filing 2024 before I finish 2023 and 2022? I’m just trying to get my life back in order and possibly maximize any return I might have and avoid the most amount of penalties I can. I haven’t been audited but I am worried I’ll screw this up somehow.

Suggestions for unfiled taxes in past years if I want to do everything electronically.

Tax professionals can file 2022, 2023, and 2024 electronically.

However, all of the online applications can only file 2024 electronically.

    2. If you think you owe on any of these returns, get them filed ASAP. Any tax service can e-file 2022 and 2023. Anything before that has to be paper filed.

A word of caution; if you are self-employed or you have a situation where the result from one year’s tax return will impact the next, you should file them in order. I usually do not recommend that my clients do them out of sequence because too many things could go wrong.

If you’re unsure, it would be best to ask either a CPA or an EA who stays open year round.
