i did not file in 2016 or 2018 – i am self employed and low income. a 1099 (paypal/ebay) was generated both years – i assume irs used that entire 1099 as my income, with no deductions. so they want a ridiculous amount for 2016 (80k). and want me to file 2018 (which i am working on now). this is the first contact they have had with me regarding this, they have had my current address for 6 years…. i have about 8 days to respond.. i am familiar with csed, and would assume (although i havent checked) that should run out soon. i have not spoke with them, the tax amount due is more than i could ever dream of paying back.. i have tried to contact several tax attorneys, but none have responded (im in an extremely rural area). i spoke with a cpa, and they were friendly, but could offer no help. i called a Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (the closest one is 2.5 hours from me) and they said they will review and get back to me. what do i do next?

That’s not a safe assumption at all. The CSED lapses ten years from the assessment date, not the return due date.

You’ll want to call IRS customer service and speak with a representative to get the exact date. You do not have to call IRS collections for this information, it’s a straightforward account inquiry.

so the csed is 8/2019 – so will be a while.. i assume i should file an ammended return.

it does say “971 Tax period blocked from automated levy program” several times in the transcript, including as recent as 2024.. why would they do this?, even though i’ve not contacted them in any way.
