So let me just make sure I have this right.. (I already did my taxes last year, but in doing FMLA, my curiosity wants to make sure I'm not missing out on anything, money wise).

I pay child support, have my son 2 nights a week, plus alternating holidays, and pay for the medical bills. But I can't claim him as a dependent at all, correct?

That’s correct. It doesn’t matter who pays support, what matters is who the child lives with more than half of the year.

    2. Correct.

If the other parent (who has him 5 nights a week) gives you a signed 8332, you could claim him for CTC *only*, but not any other dependent benefits.

You *may* be able to claim his medical bills as an itemized deduction, subject to the normal limits; I’m not sure off the top of my head.

    3. correct, typically the custodial parent gets to claim the child as a dependent. child support payments don’t affect this, unfortunately.

    4. That is correct – its based off the person the child is living with more than half the year. Technically the other parent can grant you the ability to claim dependency if you both agree to that.
