Got sent IRS notice CP87B about my 2024 tax return. It says someone claimed me as a dependent and that I did not check the box on my 2024 return. And that I need to amend my tax return.

Problem is looking at my 2024 tax return, I did check that box saying someone can claim you as a dependent.

When I originally completed my original 2024 tax return in February 2024. I did forgot to check the someone can you as a dependent box. The next week I immediately amended the tax return to correct that mistake. The amended tax return with the correction was accepted.

So what do I do now?

Both my parents and I got our correct federal tax refund money a while ago.

My parents who claimed me as a dependent have not received any letters from the IRS.

If it helps I did both the original and amended tax return on FreeTaxUSA.

Got sent an IRS notice about my 2024 tax returns. But it doesn’t make sense.

    1. Most likely the amended return has not been processed. It usually takes at least half a year for amended returns to be processed.

You say you got the correct Federal refund amount. Was that based on the amended return or the original return? If the refunds were the same amount, the fact that you received your refund doesn’t prove anything. You need to check your transcript to know, as others have said.

But since you’ve already amended to fix the error, you don’t really need to do anything at this point.
