I already filled out the paper 1040 form, now I'm trying to figure out where to mail it to. I don't owe money for that tax year thankfully, i'm having trouble finding information on what I need to mail with that 1040. I have no copies of that years W2 because the company has never gotten back to me when I've tried to get them from them, so I had to use the IRS wage & income verification for that year to file . Should I print out a copy of that and include it?

    1. I’ll just add that if you’re expecting a refund, and this is for 2024 or 2023, you will *probably* get your refund faster if you wait till the IRS opens for efile ~a month from now and efile it then, instead of mailing it now. Paper returns take a lot more time for them to process and have higher chances of stuff going wrong. (If you’re DIYing it, then you’ll need a software that allows efiling prior years, and you’ll need to get an Identity Protection PIN from the IRS website – you only need that the one time, not on an ongoing basis. You’ll need to use that same IP PIN when you file your 2025 return since that’ll be filed during the same year, but you won’t have to use it for your 2026 return and onwards. If you work with a professional, you don’t need the IP PIN to file back years.)

If this is for 2022, then you won’t be able to efile it when they reopen, so may as well mail it now.

If this is for 2021 or prior, then you won’t be able to efile it when they reopen *and* you can’t claim the refund, but it’s still not a bad idea to file the return just to show for sure that you don’t owe.
