We have an accountant do our taxes, but I’d like to be able to play with the tax forms/scenarios to better understand how doing this or that and how it affects our taxes.

I remember a bunch of years ago I think some of the leading companies advertised the program was free to use. It was only if you wanted to submit through them or even print out the returns then you would have to pay?

Any anyone know if that’s the case for any of the software These days?

And yeah, I guess I realize how contradictory this sounds – we have capital gains, K1s, dividends, salary, Roth & trad Ira’s, high salt, other things, and I’m trying to cheap out with software for free ; )

    Free to use tax software?

    1. And so I’d be looking for the fullest featured version of the software because of all those things I mentioned above. I see there ARE free levels but those don’t handle all those things above.

most of the big names bait you with “free” but charge for anything useful. good luck finding truly free options.

FreeTaxUSA supports a WIDE variety of situations and is free. Including everything you mentioned.

There is a free for filing a state return (under $20), unless you qualify for the IRS Free File program, in which case state filing is free too.
